I presented in Kansas this morning. I shared on crimes that I committed in addition and how law enforcement is not my enemy.
I haven’t had a problem with police since I found recovery. How cool was it that these guys loved it and came up to shake my hand!!!

I used to wake up dope sick, hopeless, and in addiction. Today I am free, and grateful.

It’s crazy to think I used to stare at the world through a prison window dreaming of views like this. Now, I’m living a life I couldn’t have even imagined.

The Bible is full of men who did time, Peter, John, David, Paul. God doesn’t call the qualified… He qualifies the called.

When it comes to peer recovery services, I’ve been blessed to help build this field in Arkansas and across the country. I have helped local, national, and even tribal communities.

I spent five years as the Director of Recovery Services for Arkansas and later served as the Director for the National Peer Recovery Alliance. I’ve created more recovery support programs than I can count.

And after all of that, here’s the truth I’ve learned:

There is no perfect way to do peer support.
There’s no rule book carved in stone. Everyone will have different opinions, different models, different approaches.

If you’re new in this field, breathe.
Do a heart check.
Show up honestly.
Meet people exactly where they’re at.

Support them in THEIR journey, not YOURS.

That’s it. That’s the work. ❤️

Jimmy McGill

Over five years into recovery from a twenty three year drug addiction, Jimmy has become one of America’s leading voices for substance use recovery. At one time he was considered hopeless, a throw-away, someone who would die from addiction. After his release from incarceration in 2015 Jimmy found recovery and began his advocacy work. He has worked with multiple non-profits, and community organizations. Jimmy is the Co-founder of Next Step Women, a non-profit home for women in recovery. Jimmy is the founding member of the Arkansas Peers Achieving Recovery Together (A.P.A.R.T) coalition. Despite the many self-imposed disadvantages Jimmy faced, he went on to become the first parolee to hold a state position under the office of the Arkansas State Drug Director.
