Some Appalachian families followed traditions that might surprise you. Alongside the old folk beliefs was something familiar: neighbors showing up to help a family through a difficult night.

Look closely at the sign on that building. These riders were delivering LIBRARY BOOKS.

In the 1930s, Kentucky’s packhorse librarians carried books to remote mountain communities on horses and mules. This photo shows book carriers preparing to leave Hindman, Kentucky.

The Tennessee Women Behind One of America’s Biggest Secrets

Imagine going to work every day knowing your country needs you, but being kept in the dark about what you’re helping produce.

That was the experience of many young women working at control panels in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, during World War II. Their skill helped make history, and their story deserves to be remembered.
