Know Your Neighbor: Victoria Clower
This week’s neighbor is not a resident of Evans County, nor has she ever been. However, she has partnered with Evans County Cares and the UGA Extension Office to study an often overlooked area that could impact public health - the chemicals and heavy metals present in private well water samples.

Victoria Clower and her twin, Valerie, were born in Palatka, Florida, in 1996. Their parents, Keith and Pamela Clower, moved their family, including their brother Owen, to Georgia right before their 9th grade year in school.

Know Your Neighbor: Jonathan Stanfield

This week’s neighbor is a public servant. He has worked in Evans County as a Sergeant for the Claxton Police Department for the past three years. He was easily recognized around town due to the presence of his former K9 partner, Zazo.

Jonathan Stanfield was born at Evans Memorial Hospital to David Stanfield and Tonya Phillips. The family lived in Glennville, and Jonathan graduated from Tattnall County High School in 2012. He was not involved in many extracurricular activities during high school. His dad owned D.S. Logging, and Jonathan spent hours outside school driving heavy equipment and running a chainsaw. When not at work, Jonathan enjoyed hunting with his dad. They owned working dogs and used them to hunt hogs and deer.

Know Your Neighbor: Tommy Waters

Many of you are very familiar with this week’s neighbor. Chances are, you or a family member has probably bought a car from him. His son Eli got in touch with me and suggested that I interview his dad. Eli was correct; his story needed to be told.

Tommy Waters and his older brother (by four minutes) were born in San Diego, California, on March 30, 1976, to Averitt and Lola Waters. Their brother Wil was three when they were born. Averitt was in the Navy and stationed there. They moved to Washington State for a few years before returning to Averitt’s hometown of Claxton.

Know Your Neighbor: Trish Tootle

This week’s neighbor moved from Evans County to Bulloch County a little over fifty years ago. But she hasn’t forgotten her roots. She is quick to tell people that she “lives in Statesboro, but is from Claxton.”Trish Eason Tootle was born to Henry and Joyce Eason. Joyce’s twin sister, Joy, married Henry’s brother, William. The two couples lived side by side near the current location of the “BP” on Highways 129 and 169. Joy and William did not have children, so Trish grew up with two sets of parents. Her parents gave her what she needed, and her aunt and uncle gave her what she wanted.

Know Your Neighbor: Gary Smith

Back in the 1970s, many of us learned to swim in a river or local pond using the “sink or swim” method. There was only one swimming pool in Claxton at the time, located at the Parker Recreation Center. The center offered swimming lessons, which many of us took each summer. The pool had two diving boards, and the tallest one was scary. Visiting Parker Rec was always a treat and a great opportunity to catch up with friends. This week’s neighbor brought the magic of Parker Rec to our backyards.Gary Smith was born in 1934 to Edgar and Ruby Hollingworth Smith. Dr. Griffin delivered him. Edgar farmed, then went into the carpentry business. Ruby was a homemaker who later worked as a waitress at Mrs. Rogers’ Restaurant. Gary had three brothers – Robert, Jake, and Lorin. He had one younger sister who died as a child, and his sister Ann Conner currently lives in Bulloch County. The family lived in Tattnall County. Gary attended grammar school in Manassas and graduated from Reidsville High School in 1951. He was in the last class to graduate in 11th grade. The following year, 12th grade was added. Gary enjoyed playing football (fullback) in high school. He said this kept him in school and was the only excitement he had living on the farm.
