Pioneer Guest Editorial from Diana Becton: As District Attorney, I believe our community deserves transparency and facts about how laws are enforced to keep Contra Costa County safe. That’s why I must respond to recent claims (in the June Pioneer) by Mary Knox about Proposition 36. Her accusations are simply not supported by evidence. Since Prop 36 took effect, my office has implemented it responsibly and vigorously. Follow the link below to continue reading.

Greetings to our readers, writers and advertisers:

After 22 years of covering local news for Clayton, Concord and Pleasant Hill, sadly we must retire the Pioneer at the end of August. My age (nearly 80) and a recent lung cancer diagnosis require that I step back and focus on recovery.

Reporting the stories and events of our three communities has been deeply satisfying, and our small but heroic staff and I appreciate the support and warmth from all of you. Follow the link below to continue reading.

Our Story

On May 9, 2003, we published our first issue of the Clayton Pioneer covering Contra Costa’s smallest city.

In the intervening years, we expanded our reach to cover Concord, the county’s largest city – starting with the publication of The Concordian in 2008 (which we sold to our partner in 2010) and continuing with the Concord Pioneer in 2014.

In January 2019, we combined the two papers into one large monthly covering both cities and reaching more some 38,500 households and businesses in Clayton and Concord.

The Pioneer is a true community newspaper with local writers, advertisers and long-time local publishers.
