KUDOS to the Concord Chamber for this morning’s biggest EVER First Friday. I can remember a time when 30 at a First Friday was huge. Today we saw some 200 at Gratitude Coffee. This makes my heart happy. I sooo believe in the Chamber and if you are in or part of a business in Concord, this is where to be. The Chamber MEANS BUSINESS. Kevin Cabral, William Chan, Amy Tye and all the Ambassadors, you are the true CHAMPIONS.

Mt. Diablo High School and its football team concluded a bizarre week like no other by defeating Terra Linda 52-6 in its season-opening home game Friday night. However, the game was not in Hart Fairclough Stadium on Concord’s oldest school campus but rather three miles away at Concord High. Mt. Diablo High had a football schedule unlike any other this year with eight homes games scheduled among its 10 regular season contests. That dream schedule literally went up in smoke when a group of individuals set off illegal fireworks last Saturday evening causing extensive damage to the middle section of the newly installed $1.8 million turf field which was dedicated Mar. 7. Before I begin to sing the praises of Chris Pavone’s latest literary thriller, “The Doorman,” let me say what a great honor and pleasure it has been to write for The Pioneer these many years. For readers already familiar with Pavone’s thrillers, “The Doorman” is a world apart. In fact, Pavone has traded the wide, wide world of his other thrillers for the world of the Bohemia, a much esteemed and beloved New York City apartment building. Instead of characters chasing or being chased into and out of various European countries, this story’s landscape is identified apartment-by-apartment, floor-by-floor. Time is of the essence. By page 2, we know that somebody is going to be killed before the day is over. Follow the link below to continue reading.

As The Pioneer publishes its final issue this month, I want to take a moment to reflect, express gratitude, and recognize the vital role this paper has played in connecting and informing our community for so many years. In a world that’s rapidly gone digital, The Pioneer remained something rare – a printed voice for the people. Its stories, announcements and profiles helped weave together the fabric of Concord, Clayton and Pleasant Hill. Follow the link below to continue reading.

It isn’t a sexy topic, but for pet owners whose dogs (and occasionally cats) have issues with periodic scooting or other a**l gland issues, it is an important one. A**l sacs or glands are an unpleasant carryover in our domestic pets that coyotes, wolves, skunks, wild cats, etc. use for marking their territory. These animals are able to express their glands at will to let others know where not to tread. The glands are located at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock around the a**s, just below the tail base. As I ride through Concord and take in the incredible variety of local businesses that line our streets and fill our neighborhoods, I can’t help but smile. These shops and organizations aren’t just open for business – they’re going above and beyond to support our community in meaningful, heartfelt ways. Whether it’s donating a portion of sales to school programs, offering raffle prizes that benefit local nonprofits, or hiring interns to mentor and guide the next generation, these businesses are consistently showing up and giving back. Our Story

On May 9, 2003, we published our first issue of the Clayton Pioneer covering Contra Costa’s smallest city.

In the intervening years, we expanded our reach to cover Concord, the county’s largest city – starting with the publication of The Concordian in 2008 (which we sold to our partner in 2010) and continuing with the Concord Pioneer in 2014.

In January 2019, we combined the two papers into one large monthly covering both cities and reaching more some 38,500 households and businesses in Clayton and Concord.

The Pioneer is a true community newspaper with local writers, advertisers and long-time local publishers.
