If you don’t already know, this is Dan Kathman, founder of Kathman Studios.

16 years ago, he took out a student loan and launched a video business from his dorm room at USF. What started as videos for student orgs, music videos, and short films quickly turned into work with local businesses… then national companies, international brands, five televised shows, and the story keeps going.

Today, Kathman Studios is a full-service content and social media agency based in Clearwater, FL, helping small brands look big with monthly photo, video, and marketing strategy.

Dan says:

Supply & Demand. Most businesses we work with have a demand problem. They need better media to market, advertise and grow. Sometimes it’s an issue because they dont have the money to fix the demand problem, because there’s no demand!

But others think they need more demand, when really, they have a supply problem. They’re already too busy, booked out, and stuck in the business. If we helped double, triple or 10xed their business, it might crumble or make things worse.

If that’s you, fix the supply side first: raise prices, build systems, shift from 1:1 to 1:many offers, and start creating training to hire and eventually replace yourself.

Turning people away feels cool at first, but eventually, no one wants to wait in line forever.

It’s a “good problem,” sure, but it’s still a problem. Unchecked, it can be worse than a demand problem. Fix your supply, then email us for the demand.

Explain what you do like you’re talking to an 8th grader.

Now do that every time, with everyone, about everything. That’s the secret to becoming a great communicator and being able to sell just about anything.

Drop the industry lingo. Speak plainly, but never boring. Be clear, not clever. And if you’re meeting in person, skip the PowerPoint—just speak to them.

The hardest part of marketing isn’t creativity—it’s clarity. Most people can’t explain what they do in a way that actually makes sense to normal people.

As Albert Einstein said, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” And in the words of Blaise Pascal, “I would have written a shorter letter, but I didn’t have the time.”

Simple takes work. But simple works.

I've had a camera in my hand since I was 7 & started working professionally at 19.

I am a professional photographer & video maker.

I'm an American Movie Award winning screenwriter. I have a degree in Video Production from USF. I've had a camera in my hand since I was 7, I was the camera guy in most of the clubs in high school & college, and I went pro my first year in college at 19.

I've worked with National & Local companies as well as produced short films, ads, marketing & music videos. I've worked on regional commercials, feature films and much more. I've also worked with well known brands. As a photographer I primarily shoot portraits & headshots, but I shoot a lot of different type of photography that I love.
