If confirmed, 2025 would be the first year in history to have an EF-5 tornado, Category 5 Hurricane, and G-5 geomagnetic storm all happen in the same year.

Very curious to see the post season analysis

Very curious to see the post season analysis

Melissa's maximum sustained winds were estimated to be 185 mph at landfall in Jamaica -- a number only topped by one other storm on record, 1980s Hurricane Allen which produced 190 mph winds.

HOWEVER, there is reason to believe Melissa's winds may have actually been higher. The graph I've shared shows the estimated intensity of the storm using the 'Advanced Dvorak Technique'. Without getting too into the weeds on what that is -- basically it's a way to determine hurricane intensity by looking at the satellite presentation. The red line marks the estimated surface winds -- which peaked at 185 knots, or 212 mph (!!) as the storm was making landfall.

The scientists at the NHC will dive into data like this after the season is over to determine the final landfall intensity, but I suspect when the final report on Melissa comes out next year, it will stand alone as the most intense hurricane on record in the Atlantic.

BREAKING: Hurricane Melissa has made landfall near New Hope, Jamaica, as a 185 mph Category 5. Current pressure is at an astonishingly low 892 mb. Gusts are approaching *220 mph* - some of the strongest winds EVER recorded on Earth.

It's tied for both the strongest (wind) and most intense (pressure) hurricane at landfall EVER recorded in the Atlantic.
