Update: So ... Our worms have finally started reproducing. We're beginning to find cocoons here and there in the trays. Most of the worms have moved down into the lower trays. And, I learned something valuable after we moved the worm bins inside ahead of the cold snap almost two weeks ago. See the comments to find out what I learned.

UPDATE:
So I believe that the Black Kow experiment showed enough evidence to determine that worms CAN live in it. My initial concern was that I had not started the beds with enough microbial life to give the worms a sustainable environment to thrive in. I added the Black Kow to Bin 1 to find out if they could survive in it since ChatGPT had warned it might get too hot.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the worms get their nutrients from the microbes themselves.

So, I set up two more trays and added them under both bins. This video shows that the worms have moved downward into the new trays. The bedding content ratio is, is as a guess, probably about

So ... on Saturday 2-28, I finally got around to planting our lithops. The first one that I added to the pot has begun to open. It definitely was not splitting open when I first received the package and opened it. These little plants are so cool. Looking forward to seeing how we do with them. Later on, I'll try starting some from seeds.

So, my Wife was nice and retrieved our paper shredder from the shipping container (all the at the back of our property). I used it to shred some of the brown paper Amazon shipping bags we get. It'll be great for worm bedding. Plus we put in half a peach in each tray, on top of some of the new bedding material. Evicted a few more fireants and, after the video, put some of the Borax in the motes. All these things in conjunction should eliminate the fireants from our Bins. Time will tell. Last part of the fireants elimination plan that I have yet to implement is to make the sugar, Borax, and water mixture to lay inside the trays to attract the straggler fireants. That's next on my to do list.

Still fighting the fireants this weekend. Decided to relocate the Bins to the front porch area (north side of the house). Been going through the trays every few hours and evicting fireants. Spent some time researching what other folks do to remedy the problem and came up with something that should work. I've decided to try a mixture of sugar, borax, and water, in a used water bottle. I'll make a few "ant-sized" holes in the water bottles and, hopefully they'll be the ticket to eliminating the fireants from the Bins completely. Guess we're going to find out.
Another thing is "castle-motes" around the feet. Walmart has black plastic bowls for $0.50/each. Bought 10 and placed them under the feet of one Bin so far. Filled with water and will add soap later. Since I first discovered the ants I have probably "evicted" 60 - 70 of them, maybe more.

Well… apparently I hired 2,500 employees AND a few uninvited contractors sneaked in. 🐜
Found fire ants in Worm Bin 1 yesterday evening. That's a hard no. "Evicted" all I saw. I went back this morning and served up a few more "eviction notices". Pretty sure that y'all can read between the lines, but just to be certain ... I squished every ant I saw. No regrets, no remorse.

This is part of real-world worm farming — pests show up when conditions allow it. Now I get to troubleshoot:
• Too dry?
• Food exposed?
• Bin location issue?
Adjust. Observe. Correct.
The worms stay. The ants get evicted.
