Moving on from Grief

"Grief is the sadness that we experience after losing a loved one - it can be someone who has passed away, the loss of a friendship, etc. Some people are expressive - what you see is what you get. Other people internalize it more. It depends on the circumstances.

If it is the loss of a loved one or child that is going to take longer to navigate. Sometimes it takes more time for people to feel grief. When you have a great loss the grief is always going to be there. If you don't process your pain, you can transmit it to other things to try to avoid it. Paul says to live according to the spirit and not the flesh. And if we don't deal with it, we are not going to live in the fruits of the spirit. The key is where Christ is in the picture. Jesus wants to be there with us in the grief.

Someone who experiences grief longer than normal is filling their lives with idolatry - God wants all of our affection. Honor the love that you had for someone, but if it continues then it is a realization that that person was more in your life than God. If you lose a child, you never really recover from that. If you still have the bedroom of the child set up seven years down the road then you aren't moving on. When we have trauma we need to know that someone is with us.

Let is out with God - He weeps with us! He understands what loss looks like. And He wants to be with you in it. Eventually, we need to let it go and say goodbye. We need to live our lives and make them full and meaningful. If you are on hold - you never get to do that."

Praying God's Promises

"When we read scripture there are so many places that God promises that he will be true to his promises. I think it is so important that we remember God's promises and remember that he is true to his word.

Often times I get frustrated with scripture put on a mug because it's out of place and out of context. When you look at Jeremiah 29 it's not that God is going to prosper us but that God is never going to turn his back on you. God's character never changes, even though how he fulfills his promises might be different.

For some people, life is not going good today. But when we miss read scripture and tell people this miss read scripture then we are not giving people the correct image of God.

Look at if there is a condition and 'if' there. Is God offering a principle of how to interact with Him to get a response - there is a promise there. He is promising who He will be towards us. We need to correct our perspective of Him. It's helpful to look in the New Testament to see if those promises are fulfilled and stay true.

Philippians 1:6 is a promise that we can hold onto 'being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.' God may not change your circumstances or people, but He welcomes you to be honest with Him and will gently convict you."

A Child's Pain has a Purpose

"There is a lack of resiliency in young adults (individuals in their 20s) because they haven't been able to learn how to navigate or cope well. It's not because they are lazy, it's because they haven't had the resources to help them learn to deal with stress. And as adults, we failed them in that area.

There is nothing in scripture that says that we aren't going to suffer, but your pain contributes to your spiritual formation and maturing. We need to allow our children to experience pain so they can grow."

How to Better Love Your Wife

"The first way is by listening and asking their wives how they are feeling without interjection. Your wife doesn't want you to fix her problems, but to take time and listen. Not every thought might make sense, but it is a way to verbally process their emotions. Even restating what she is stating or showing understanding helps show that you care.

Second, validate her. Women usually feel like men are trying to simplify things that aren't simple. Men process things completely differently. In some ways, most problems women deal with is very complicated. Take parenting, for example, not every child will need the same care. So women have to change gears and adapt to figuring out problems. There is value in both perspectives - from men and women - but there is important nuance that is lost if you don't value that.

Sometimes the thing (in marriage) that we are fighting about really isn't about the issue that you think it is.

The third way is affirming. Validation is seeing how you can see why she feels the way that she does. And affirming is showing that you value and love her for who she is. Those words are so healing to a woman's heart. When you say positive things you are placing emotional investments in the bank."

03/08/2023

"We have all these spiritual tools to win the spiritual battle. Sounds great on paper, but what does that actually mean? When it comes to addictions we want to world's approval to be okay. The world has taught me this lie. God has told me to meditate on his word and fight this spiritual battle.

I always recommend that a family member or friend wanting to support an individual going through addiction should attend a meeting. That way they understand the fundamentals and all that they are going through. But you are working through this process with them. Our first go-to as Christians shouldn't be to walk away.

Let's say that there is someone who is struggling off and on with addiction. From a Christian perspective, many people have overcome other difficulties in life. But you need to be very direct with someone. Don't belittle someone but don't enable them. And maybe what it takes is going to a meeting with them."

5 questions that help me gauge my spiritual health:
Am I giving myself to intentional times of prayer?
Am I committed to interior examination?
Am I joining my life to the poor & marginalized?
Am I connected to others in ways that foster vulnerability?
Am I growing in love?

"Marriage needs to be a reflection of God's image. Sometimes we need to rate our marriage from 1 to 10 and ask ourselves if our marriage is doing just that. As you pursue God, you pursue holiness. There needs to be a level of transparency in all of our lives, but there is also a privacy factor as well. When we reflect on his character, it means that we are going to better serve others."

National Brian Day is celebrated on March 6 every year, giving us an excuse to shower the Brians of our life with the love and respect that’s their due. There have been several spikes in popularity, especially during the ‘60s and ‘70s, which placed the name in the top 10 ranking in the U.S. And is it any wonder it also falls on National Heroes and Benefactors Day?

What a comfort it is that God is at the center of all things! Even so, that doesn't diminish the fact that life can throw us curve balls and lead to tough times. That is where we got you!

We are here to walk alongside you - to encourage and challenge you in your walk with Christ. Consider passing that encouragement on to someone else and help keep our ministry going.

National Employee Appreciation Day, on March 3, reminds managers that strong employer-employee relations are at the core of any truly successful business. Take some time on National Employee Appreciation Day to connect with your employees, offer authentic praise, and listen to their experiences. If you can, give your employees part of the day off, or treat them to a special lunch or group activity.

March 2 is National Read Across America Day. The day was established by the National Education Association in 1998 to help get kids excited about reading. The day occurs each year on the birthday of beloved children’s book author Dr. Seuss, so a perfect way to celebrate is to don a Seussian hat and read one his famous tales, like One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.

Ohio, The Heart of It All was the official tourism slogan for the state of Ohio from 1984 to 2001. Why did that fit so well? First of all, have you ever noticed that Ohio is shaped roughly like a heart? Second, about 50% of the total U.S. population lives within a 500-mile radius of Columbus, Ohio. And now, why don’t you tell me why Ohio should be called “the heart of it all”? You can leave your comments on Facebook or Instagram.

Is there a hole on the golf course between your studio and edgerton road? If there isn't there ought to be.
I was listening to your show this morning as I drove to work, and I do understand about loving your neighbor, but I also cannot believe that God would want us to support someone who is clearly against God and Christian beliefs. What if America had decided to Love Hi**er and do nothing but sit by and watch as he committed his atrocities? Please read Ephesians 6, 10-17. To not see that the Devil and the powers of evil are not at work within leaders of this world, of this country, is naive. I'm not promoting hate or violence, but I am also not promoting that we lay down and allow this to just happen.
Question for Dave: When should a child mark they are or are not being reported as a dependent on someone else's tax return?
Brian- I have a comment and a question--
Comment: You said this AM that you are not a "theologian." I understand what you are saying, however we are all called to be theologians - people who study God's Word. We might have different levels of understanding God's word, but we have a responsibility in studying/meditating on His word. RC Sproul corrected my thinking on this years ago.

Question: As I was getting out of my car to start my day, you just mentioned that you asked Russell Moore if you/him prayed to the same "Jesus" as those who were praying in the Capitol on Jan 6.(I presume the answer was "no".) My question to you (and Dr Moore), do you/we pray to the same "Jesus" as Silvester Beaman in reference to his benediction at President Biden's Inauguration - "...and in the strong name of our collective faith, Amen."?

Just respectfully asking...
Hello! This morning at around 7:20 shared a list of a few things folks could do regarding the change in leadership. It started with this: Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. (2 Corinthians 5:20, ESV)
Could you please post the list? It was 6-8 things. I was driving and couldn’t write them down. Thanks!
Both of you are choking today!! LOL
Can you please share the name of the book Jenelle discussed this morning about deepening friendship between couples? Thank you!

Hi Brian and Jannelle! I checked the mailbox on my way out of the driveway this morning and was so excited to see I was a winner of a "BIG OLD HAM" and bundt cake! 😅THANK YOU very much!
