A student-led environmental nonprofit has removed roughly 5,000 pounds of trash from beaches and shorelines around Lake Erie 🚮

Since launching, Lake Footprints has organized more than 20 cleanups and brought together over 200 volunteers. The group’s next cleanup is scheduled for September 12 from 9–11 a.m. at Euclid Beach. Learn more at LakeFootprints.org

The Grease Pole Climb, known as La Cuccagna, is one of the most memorable traditions at St. Rocco’s Festival on Cleveland’s West Side. Teams work together to scale the heavily greased pole, building a human ladder until someone can reach the flag at the top.

St. Rocco Church has held its annual festival since 1915, bringing generations of Clevelanders together to celebrate the parish and the city’s Italian heritage. More than a century later, the climb remains one of the festival’s biggest spectacles.

Cleveland’s Olympic boxing tradition runs five consecutive Games deep.

The streak began with Raynell Williams in 2008, followed by Terrell Gausha in 2012, Charles Conwell in 2016, Delante “Tiger” Johnson in 2020, and most recently Morelle McCane in 2024.

McCane became the first female boxer from Cleveland to qualify for the Olympics, competing in Paris.

This fall, another major stage for boxing arrives in the city. The 2026 USA Boxing National Open will bring athletes of all ages and divisions to Cleveland Public Auditorium, with matches taking place September 28 through October 3.
