Built in 1966 as construction number 3458-08, this Alco C415 was delivered new to the Southern Pacific as No. 2407. After it was retired from SP, the locomotive entered short-line service in 1979 with the Columbia & Cowlitz Railroad at Longview, Washington, where it was renumbered as No. 702. It left the C&C roster in May 1989 and soon moved south to Oregon, passing through Bob Steele & Associates before entering excursion service.

At Burlington Junction, the C415 served primarily as a backup locomotive and saw little use in its final years, having been inactive since the fall of 2024. With BJRY no longer operating Alco power, No. 702 was sold in 2025 to Strategic Rail Transport, Inc. (STPX). A second BJRY C415, No. 22—long stored at 30th Street—was also sold to STPX and has recently been observed in Ottawa, Illinois, likely undergoing repairs ahead of its next assignment.

Norfolk Southern Arrives for Christmas at the Curve!

The Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark was filled with holiday spirit on Friday evening, December 19, as Santa Claus made a memorable appearance at the Curve, arriving in classic railroad fashion aboard a Norfolk Southern train.

Crowds gathered shortly after the gates opened at 5 p.m., braving the winter evening to welcome Santa as he rolled into view between 6 and 7 p.m. Leading the Office Car Special consist were Norfolk Southern’s recently unveiled “Legacy Series” EMD SD70ACe locomotives, drawing added attention from rail enthusiasts and families alike and providing a striking backdrop to the festive scene.

Following his arrival, Santa greeted guests, posed for photos, and spread Christmas cheer throughout the evening. Visitors warmed up with complimentary hot chocolate, cookies, and popcorn while enjoying the sights and sounds of the season at one of Pennsylvania’s most iconic landmarks.

The event marked the kickoff of "A Magical Christmas" and was made possible through the support of corporate sponsors Unlimited Cycle, Keller Engineering, and Norfolk Southern. Refreshments were donated by Sheetz and Eat'n Park.

Despite the funicular being out of service, attendees made their way to the Curve on foot, adding to the sense of anticipation and tradition surrounding the annual holiday gathering. The evening concluded with smiles, photographs, and the lasting memory of Santa’s rail-borne arrival at the Curve.
