When planning a new greenhouse, selecting the style is one of the most important decisions a grower must make.

Generally, for someone starting out in the business or expanding a small operation, the free-standing greenhouse is the best choice. For a larger, established business with strong markets, the multi-span is preferred.

There’s a lot to consider when building a new greenhouse. Find out which style is right for you in our guide, part of our 2025 Greenhouse Insider special section with the National Greenhouse Manufacturers Association (NGMA):

Energy is often one of the top operating costs for growers behind labor. Improving energy efficiency can allow greenhouses to reduce their environmental footprint and, when done correctly, also save on energy expenses.

You can use this energy efficiency guide from Sustainabloom (American Floral Endowment (AFE)) that's part of our 2025 Greenhouse Insider special section with the National Greenhouse Manufacturers Association (NGMA) to help make decisions in your business and communicate plans with your team, customers and suppliers:

It starts innocently enough. You want to ensure everything runs smoothly, so you check in often. You spot a typo in a presentation, so you fix it yourself. Someone misses a minor detail, and you think, “I’ll just handle it next time.” Before long, you’re reviewing every email, sitting in on every meeting and wondering why your team can’t seem to get anything done without you.

Most people don’t set out to micromanage — it often comes from a desire to help, avoid mistakes or ensure high standards. But the unintended consequences are real: a demotivated team, slower progress and burned-out leaders. If this sounds familiar, don’t worry. Awareness is the first step, and change is possible.

Let’s dive into some questions to see if micromanagement might be sneaking into your leadership style and explore actionable tips from Business Training Works, Inc. to break the habit:

Our Outside the Lines columnist, Jennifer Moss of Moss Greenhouses, says that those in the horticulture industry know what it means to grow. We measure it. We plan for it. We work hard to coax life from soil, sun and sweat.

But when it comes to growing ourselves, our teams or our businesses, we tend to avoid the one thing that guarantees it: discomfort.

Change is uncomfortable, and letting go of something familiar — even if it’s broken — can feel like betrayal.

Jennifer shares a hard truth: The pain of staying the same is worse:

Biocontrol is hard, and there is no one-size-fits-all biocontrol program.

Biocontrol also doesn’t eliminate the need for pesticides.

It’s understandable that those invested in biocontrol are cautious about pesticide use.

Pesticides are developed to kill or inhibit insects, mites and microorganisms. Ironically, biocontrol agents are also insects, mites and microorganisms. Pesticide use inevitably impacts BCA biology and behavior; therefore, eliminating pesticide use serves to protect investments in biocontrol.

Despite the concerns, an integrated program can achieve more effective pest management. Integration may be the only available approach when biocontrol programs achieve poor or mediocre performance, or when we are dealing with a pest or disease that has no effective biocontrol solutions or is too expensive to manage biologically.

With the high cost of building greenhouses, a low-cost shade house is a good option to provide additional space for peak production periods.

This type of structure can provide protection from warm and cold temperatures, wind and pests. It's also good for hardening plants and can reduce irrigation needs and pesticide use.

Plus, shade houses are easy to build without needing a foundation, glazing or an environmental control system.

Mealybugs infiltrate greenhouses as tiny first-instar crawlers, easily hitching a ride on plant structures, tools and worker clothing — making eradication a persistent challenge. No current strategy fully eliminates mealybugs, largely due to gaps in species identification and their resilience against control measures.

However, infestations can be managed at an optimal level through precise species identification and a strategic approach that considers overlooked factors and the efficacy of available insecticides.

Discover mealybug control tips for greenhouses using chemical efficacy data and proven insecticide strategies in this article from Zee Ahmed, Ph.D., an assistant professor at Clemson University's College of Agriculture, Forestry & Life Sciences, and two Ph.D. students, Powlomee Mondal and Peilin Tan, in Ahmed's Turf and Ornamental Lab. Their research focuses on diagnostic tools and control strategies for managing mealybugs in greenhouses:

This year, the show’s theme was “Gardens of Tomorrow.” Jennifer Reed, founder of New Jersey-based Jennifer Designs, took home the Best in Show – Floral award this year.

We talked with Reed about the inspiration and creative process for her winning exhibit at this year’s show, Welcoming Wildlife Home, which showcases the essential role of wildlife in maintaining a healthy, thriving ecosystem grounded in biodiversity:
