First Day of School Photo Contest!

Do you have a young student starting school tomorrow? Take his or her picture at school on the first day and send it our way.

Here are the rules:

• Take a candid shot of your student (any grade) tomorrow at his/her first day of school, something that screams, "first day of school!!!"
• Your prize? We'll run the best pics on our page, and choose at least one of your photos to run in next Thursday's newspaper (depending on quality of entries).
• Aim for higher resolution photos ... quality matters!
• We only want your student/child in the photo, no other students' faces please! Student and teacher pics are fine! Students hugging parents goodbye are also fine. Be creative!
• Send ONE photo to our Facebook Messenger inbox to be considered.
• Deadline is Monday, August 4 at 5 pm. We won't accept photos after that time.
• Necessary written information: Include your name, email, and phone number; your student's/child's name, city of residence, school name, grade, and brief explanation of what we're seeing in the photo.
• Have fun!

Cleveland has appointed Brady “Bo” Medlock as interim fire chief, effective August 1, 2025, replacing former chief Ricky Pruitt, who resigned last week. Medlock will assume full duties and responsibilities of the fire chief during this leadership transition.

Medlock brings more than a decade of fire service experience to the role. He has served as Captain of “B” Shift with the White County Fire Department and has worked with multiple fire departments across the region, including the Cleveland and Helen departments.

“The city council and I appreciate Bo’s willingness to accept this leadership role and provide stability for the fire department during this transition," Mayor Josh Turner said. "Public safety is a high priority for the city and this decision reiterates our commitment to keeping our community safe.”

Medlock added, "It’s an absolute honor to step into this interim role and serve our community in a new capacity. I’m excited to lead such a dedicated, hardworking team, and I look forward to building on our strong foundation while continuing to prioritize safety, teamwork, and innovation. I strive to carry on the legacy that Chief Pruitt left behind.”

Slow down, Cleveland! There are mini police officers in training checking your speed. They're also running an obstacle course, learning gun safety, hanging out with the SWAT team, learning about hostage negotiation, and so much more. The Junior Law Enforcement Academy is finishing up a second week of fun at the Cleveland Worship Center.

Our friends at the Cleveland Police Department 🚓 let us know that several parking spaces across from the historic courthouse facing the square will be blocked off Friday morning, July 11. This will allow the safe transport of several pre-fab homes 🏡 to their permanent sites here in Cleveland near downtown. So be aware that parking may be limited! 🚗
