A little last minute flashback Friday post. Same view - 3 years later.

It was move-in ready when we bought it. But that doesn’t mean it felt like us yet. 🤎

Over time, we added our own touches, pieces we love, a little character, and layers of cozy.

Nothing happened overnight. Just little changes that slowly turned a perfectly nice house into a home that feels like ours.

If you spend enough time online, you’d think we’re the odd ones for having - and loving - an older house. There’s plenty to love:

Mature trees.
Established neighborhoods.
History.
Character.
Smaller cozy rooms.
Original details that make the home unique.

You’re not doing homeownership wrong. Follow along if you’re crushing on old houses too. 🤎

* A room can take years to feel finished. Maybe it never really is.
* Buying something and realizing it doesn’t work.
* Having a room feel “off” and not knowing why. (The length of this room just stumped me.)
* Adding things one layer (or one piece) at a time.
* Changing your mind about paint (like this green which was a fan favorite but we hated it!! We lived with it for a year) furniture or decor (farmhouse).
* Living with an empty wall until you find the right thing. (It took us years to figure out what we want on the walls.)
* Letting your home evolve as you evolve. (Or in our case, become a blend of both our styles.)
* Making mistakes. Because that’s actually how you figure out what you love.

A collected home isn’t created in a weekend. It’s built one decision — and a few wrong ones — at a time.

1. Paint the cabinets — You don’t have to replace perfectly functional cabinets.

2. Add café curtains — Instant cottage charm and softness.

3. Install wainscoting — Architectural character without a major renovation.

4. Add a vintage-style rug — Warmth, pattern, and personality. Ours has a vintage look but is washable. Pretty and practical.

5. Bring in warm lighting — the under cabinet lights completely changed the lighting for work spaces but tiny countertop lamps change the whole mood.

We didn’t gut our kitchen. We just made it feel more like us. A little paint, some architectural charm, soft fabrics, and warm lighting made all the difference.

Proof that you don’t need a brand-new kitchen to have one you love. 🤎

Turns out “move-in ready” and “making it your own” are two very different things. 🤎

Not sure it’ll ever be finished. We started making it our own within hours. And it has become our very favorite place to be.

One of my favorite things about living in Ohio is getting to experience all four seasons. 🍂

I love summer—the porch, the garden, the pool and those long evenings outside—but I’m ready for what comes next.

That’s the best part about living in the Midwest. Just when you’ve loved one season well, another comes along and gives you a whole new reason to love being home. 🤎
