He started with one truck in the Great Depression…Today, his family runs a $5 billion freight empire and they’re worth over $1.7 billion.

In 1931, Webster Willis Estes was a farm kid from rural Virginia. The country was deep in the Great Depression, jobs were scarce, and money was tight. But he saw an opportunity.

With a single used truck, he began hauling livestock and produce for farmers, running short routes to market. His reliability earned trust, and soon, Estes was hauling more than just farm goods he was moving freight for businesses across Virginia.

By the 1950s, Estes Express Lines was a regional name. His sons joined the business, and the family began opening terminals across the Southeast.

When W.W. Estes passed in 1971, Robey Estes Sr. took over, modernizing the fleet and expanding nationwide. In the 1990s, leadership passed to Robey Estes Jr., who still serves as Chairman & CEO today.

Now, the company runs over 9,000 tractors and 37,000 trailers, employs more than 22,000 people, and moves freight across all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

The Estes family still owns 100% of the company. And with an estimated net worth of $1.7 billion, they’re one of the wealthiest families in U.S. trucking, all thanks to one truck, one man, and a legacy that’s lasted nearly a century.
