Important Message from City of Maple Heights.
Like many cities across the region, the City of Maple Heights is experiencing a regional salt shortage. Residents may notice that both side streets and main roads are not down to bare pavement, and slippery or icy conditions may exist.
Under normal circumstances, salt deliveries arrive within 3–5 days after an order is placed. Currently, delivery timeframes have increased to three or more weeks due to transportation issues and delivery backlogs affecting our supplier. While salt remains available to order, many surrounding communities are completely out of salt and are being prioritized for delivery due to safety concerns.
The City is diligently working with supplier representatives to obtain additional salt as it becomes available.
🚨 Important Information About Cold Temperatures & Salt Effectiveness 🚨
During extremely cold temperatures, salt becomes less effective at melting snow and ice. In these conditions, vehicle traffic plays an important role by helping to crush and grind salt into the roadway, allowing it to work more effectively over time. Even when salt is applied, roads may remain snow-covered or icy.
🚧 What This Means for Road Treatment 🚧
• The City will not be salting side streets during this shortage
• Main roads will be spot-salted at major intersections only
• During heavy snow events of 1 inch or more per hour, roads will not be salted, as crews focus on plowing and conserving materials
• Drivers should expect winter driving conditions
🌨️ Upcoming Weather Alert 🌨️
We are expecting one of the largest snowstorms in some time beginning Saturday night and continuing into Sunday.
🚗 How Residents Can Help 🚗
• Please slow down and allow extra travel time
• Keep parked vehicles off the streets to allow plows full access
• Use extra caution when driving and walking
We appreciate your patience, understanding, and cooperation as we manage this regional shortage and continue to prioritize public safety.
