We've teamed up with Room to Read, an international organization that promotes literacy by providing books in marginalized communities throughout the world. We'll be publishing books for the Oceti Sakowin (Dakota, Nakota, Lakota), Alaska Native, Hawaiian Native, Ojibwe, Cherokee, Choctaw and Dine' (Navajo) people this coming spring 2026. Our authors will be:

Leslie Apple (Pine Ridge Lakota)
Brad Wagnon (Oklahoma Cherokee)
Chelsea Elizabeth Tyagi (Oklahoma Choctaw)
Allison Waukau (Dine')
Sheri Hunani Maxwell (Native Hawaiian)
Jackie Schaeffer (Inupiaq)
Tom Peacock (Ojibwe)

The books will be distributed free of charge to schools, libraries and other organizations in each tribal nation by the Room to Read organization.

This Sunday, June 8th, from 11AM until 1PM, the Madeline Island Museum welcomes Black Bears & Blueberries Publishing, a Native-owned publishing company featuring children’s books written and illustrated by native authors and artists. Book readings and signings of new releases from authors Kiki Garcia, “Fishing by Torchlight”, Dee Sweet, “Do Rabbits Have Habits?”, Art Coulson “Our Stories”, Evan Larson & Melonee Montano “Ishkode, A Story of Fire”, and Roxanne Gould “Murphy, the Boss Cat of Little Earth” will delight all. The Museum will also have a 50% discounted admission both Saturday, June 7th and Sunday June 8th for Visitor Appreciation weekend.
