Fort Myers, Florida — August 26, 2026. Demonstrators gathered outside the Luminary Hotel in downtown Fort Myers following reports that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were staying at the hotel amid increased immigration enforcement activity in Lee County.

The demonstration remained peaceful as Fort Myers police monitored the area.

Every second and fourth Sunday, people gather outside the Broward Transitional Center (BTC) in Pompano Beach for a Freedom Vigil.

This is not simply a vigil outside a detention center. It is a place where Floridians can see the consequences of a much larger immigration enforcement system taking shape across the state.

BTC is an ICE detention facility operated by GEO Group with a listed capacity of 700 people. It is one of Florida’s major immigration detention facilities .

At the same time, Florida has become a national center of cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE through 287(g) Agreement.

Under 287(g), ICE can delegate certain immigration-enforcement functions to state and local law enforcement officers. In Florida, all 67 counties have entered into 287(g) agreements, while additional state and local agencies have joined the program.

That means immigration enforcement can reach people during traffic stops, in county jails, and throughout communities across Florida.

And the scale is significant nearly 39,000 immigrants were arrested in Florida between January 20, 2025 and March 11, 2026, more than triple the number during a comparable period under the previous administration.

That is why showing up at BTC matters.

For people in Broward, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach and communities throughout Florida this is an opportunity to stand with families who may be directly affected by detention and deportation, to witness what is happening, and to make sure the people held inside are not forgotten.

The Freedom Vigil takes place every second and fourth Sunday outside the Broward Transitional Center in Pompano Beach.

Yesterday, we went to document Oliver Larkin’s campaign closing event in South Florida .

Oliver did not win the Democratic primary, but his campaign clearly made an impact. What stood out was not only the election itself, but the grassroots movement that formed around it more than 500 volunteers, nearly 20,000 donors, over 40,000 doors knocked according to the campaign.

In his speech yesterday he emphasized that the movement was never about one person or one election. He pointed to the campaign infrastructure and the people behind it as something intended to continue beyond election night.

These are some of the moments I captured for OwlMedia, documenting a political movement in South Florida that, win or lose, clearly left a mark.

Friday August 14, Ahead of Tuesday's primary elections, the Chomp the Oligarchy rally brought together U.S. House candidates Oliver Larkin and Elijah Manley, U.S. Senate candidate Angie Nixon, and U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib.
The gathering reflected the growing push for progressive and Democratic Socialist candidates in South Florida, with speakers calling for a new generation of political leadership.

07/26/26 In Fort Myers, the effects of immigration enforcement are not measured only in arrests. They can also be found in the belongings left behind: a mattress on the curb, a pile of clothes soaked by rain, a child’s teddy bear covered in dirt.

Accompanied by fellow photojournalist Dave decker Dave Decker (he/him) and a legal observer we spent the day in Fort Myers documenting the impact that increased ICE activity has had on immigrant communities.

As we drove through the city, the legal observer pointed out apartment buildings where, they said, families had been detained or deported, leaving behind homes now emptied of the people who once lived in them. Outside, piles of furniture, mattresses, clothing, and children’s belongings lined the curbs.

Locked gates now seal the entrance to the former Alligator Alcatraz concentration camp in the Florida Everglades after public pressure, legal challenges, and mounting reports of abuse forced its closure. The blue sign that once marked the entrance has disappeared, leaving behind only chain-link fencing, heavy steel gates, and an empty road leading into what human rights advocates describe as one of the darkest chapters in Florida’s immigration system. Although the camp has been shut down, the suffering has not ended. Many of those imprisoned there were transferred to the Federal Detention Center in downtown Miami, where families and immigrant rights organizations continue to report overcrowding, inadequate food, lack of clean drinking water, denial of medication, and extreme indoor temperatures. Relatives and advocates say cells built for 50 people now hold nearly twice that number, with detainees allegedly forced to drink from sinks or toilets while enduring inhumane conditions

We visited Washington, D.C., and attended the Veterans Rally hosted by flare.usa, during 7 Days in Dc where military veterans and advocates gathered to speak on issues they say are affecting democracy, accountability, and the role of the military in civic life. The event took place just days after active-duty U.S. Air Force Major Jason Watson was arrested while protesting in uniform on the Capitol steps . #
