Paul Bender's long lost easy listening project finally sees the light of day, moving into winter in the southern hemisphere during a global pandemic in which we are all forced to be on our own internal islands, feels like the entirely appropriate time to make this dreamlike record of soft warm breezes, mysterious birdcalls, starlit pools in which lovers swim, a castaways hermitage transcribed on palm fronds and sent in a bottle across the distant waves to your golden shores...

Released today on Plug Seven Records and Wondercore Island is ‘Sweet Water’ from jazz pianist and composer Barney McAll; and ‘Drifting’ by 30/70.

The double A-side single is the second release from Seven Wonders – Plug Seven Records and Wondercore Island’s forthcoming compilation capturing the raw energy and virtuosity of Melbourne’s vital, and irrepressible jazz and groove-led music scene. The compilation will be out on February 7th

Much like Melbourne’s diverse cultural landscape, McAll’s track is a synthesis of global influences. On ‘Sweet Water’ he incorporates classic Rhodes keys, Moroccan castanets, and on the track’s hook, bulbul tarang – a string instrument from India and Pakistan derived from the Japanese taishƍgoto harp. These diverse influences are bolstered by McAll’s experiences travelling in Cuba where he discovered the regional Santería faith and its sacred batá drums, played here by Javier Fredes.

While there is an emotional core to the track, McAll also believes it’s broadly political and says it exemplifies Melbourne’s irrepressible DIY underground.

***

30/70 Collective’s track “Drifting” begins with horns that rise like mist off a frozen canal. Clipped synthesizer fragments pop and fizzle like flashes of spring rain on freshly warmed concrete. It’s taught and anxious but also filled with the excitement of impending change.

The track was recorded to tape in two parts. First an instrumental was laid down in the Plug Seven studio by the core 30/70 band members, while singer Allysha Joy was finishing off a solo European tour. On her return to Melbourne Joy recorded vocals inspired by changes both seasonal and personal.

“Lyrically the track is about that change of seasons, but also that change within self,” says Joy. “It was shifting into winter there and into summer in Melbourne and I felt that polarity happening within myself.”

Joy had been playing solo for four months in Europe. It was a deeply spiritual experience culminating in a week of writing and self-reflection in Berlin that was then brought to life in the Plug Seven Records studio.

“The Plug Seven studio is one of these really beautiful places with a lot of analogue gear. You get this beautiful organic sound that’s really unique to that space. The negative is that because you’re recording to tape it’s unchangeable,” says Joy. “But that’s what’s beautiful about the whole compilation. It’s a testament to the beauty of Melbourne’s musicians, their musicality and skill level.”

Rising Melbourne Eight-Piece WVR BVBY release first single on forthcoming Seven Wonders Compilation.

Plug Seven Records & Wondercore Island Australian jazz odyssey is coming! A 14 track double LP Seven Wonders, brings its first single here; instrumental track ‘Custard Shoulder’ from Melbourne eight-piece WVR BVBY.

The band last year released their astounding self-titled debut LP on Plug Seven Records, an organic one take head nod to the best of jazz, prog & mathematical funk & since then they've been on the UP!
The new track is described by the band as a “reflection upon a breakup
a tribute to a favourite childhood dessert, the comfort of a shoulder to lean on and the value of friendship within music.” The track is a swirling, downbeat, jazz-funk reverie in which drums skitter and horns yearn. 'Custard Shoulder' is yet another vital slice of Australian soul and jazz that show's how despite Melbourne’s geographically remote location, its groove-led music has the power to cross oceans.

Out now on Plug Seven Records and Wondercore Island.

**SURF JAZZ**
#7 in the Wondercore Island Mixtape 'Series'

This music is all Australian artist and producers (ex. Fehdah, who hails from Ireland) it's of a compendium of what we think Surf Jazz might sound like if it actually existed...

A trove of spacey beat-makers, hallucinatory rappers, wall slapping jazzy-house, dreamy-psych fusion, spiritual porn-funk, and slacker B-Sides.

All funds raised for Wondercore Island #7 - Surf Jazz go to Waves of Wellness - Mental Health Awareness (WOW).
www.foundationwow.org

"WOW is a mental health and surf therapy charity, promoting positive mental health and wellbeing through our range of innovative programs.

These programs break down the barriers and stigma that prevent people from being well. Get wet and have a good time, we say. It’s simple enough, but the message runs deeper: it’s OK not to be OK, and you don’t have to – ever – go it alone.

WOW believe dealing with mental health is not just about dealing with crisis, but also about finding healthy outlets for people who are struggling, recovering and doing fine. By facilitation conversations and connection and by increasing awareness, they want to change the way mental health is viewed and treated."
