🚨 BREAKING: LINDSAY CLANCY TRIAL ENDS IN HUNG JURY — MISTRIAL DECLARED, BUT DEFENSE MAKES EMERGENCY APPEAL 🚨
The closely watched murder trial of Lindsay Clancy took another dramatic turn Friday as the jury failed for a third time to reach a unanimous verdict.
After approximately 36 hours of deliberations over seven days, the jury remained deadlocked.
Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial at approximately 11:25 a.m. Friday, but the case is not completely settled yet.
Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, immediately asked the judge to pause the mistrial so he could seek emergency relief from the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the state's highest court.
The judge granted the defense one hour to file the emergency request.
⚖️ WHAT CAUSED THE DEADLOCK?
The jury's division became public Thursday after the foreperson sent notes to the judge concerning a single holdout juror.
The defense argued that the juror acknowledged having doubt but was refusing to apply the legal standard of reasonable doubt. Reddington asked Judge Sullivan to remove the juror.
Sullivan refused.
The judge said the information provided did not establish that the juror was refusing to follow the law. He had previously questioned jurors individually about whether they could follow his instructions and then reminded them of the legal standard for reasonable doubt.
Reports have described the jury as 11–1, although that numerical split has been attributed to information from the defense and should not be treated as an official verdict or formal jury vote released by the court.
👩⚖️ WHAT WAS CLANCY ON TRIAL FOR?
Clancy pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the January 2023 deaths of her children:
• Cora, 5
• Dawson, 3
• Callan, 8 months
The children were killed at the family's home in Duxbury, Massachusetts.
Clancy has not disputed that she strangled the children.
The central issue at trial was whether she was criminally responsible for her actions.
The defense argued Clancy was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis, along with other serious mental-health issues, and therefore should be found not criminally responsible.
Prosecutors argued that Clancy intentionally planned the killings and understood what she was doing, maintaining that she was criminally responsible.
🚨 WHAT HAPPENS NOW?
The immediate question is whether the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court will intervene following the defense's emergency appeal.
If the higher court does not stop the process, the mistrial will stand.
A mistrial caused by a hung jury is not a finding of not guilty.
Prosecutors could potentially seek a new trial, negotiate a plea agreement, or decide not to pursue another trial.
For now, there is NO VERDICT against Lindsay Clancy.
