I don’t believe in coincidences. I believe we are guided to certain places, and sometimes, if we are paying attention, we are given moments we were meant to experience.
I decided to walk over to the Macedonia Baptist Church and the Harriet Tubman Museum to take a few photos.
As I approached the church, a lovely woman appeared, locking one of the doors. We started talking, and she began sharing the history of these beautiful buildings and the people who helped bring their stories to life.
She told me about Reverend Robert O. Davis, who served as pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church for nearly five decades and was also a tenor soloist with the renowned Wings Over Jordan Choir. The church and the neighboring Howell House, now home to the Harriet Tubman Museum, are deeply connected to Cape May’s African American history and the legacy of those who fought for freedom and equality.
Then she said, “Would you like to come inside?”
I knew she had been locking up and was probably ready to go home, so I told her I didn’t want to hold her up.
She smiled and said, “No, no. Please come in.”
So I stepped through the doors of Macedonia Baptist Church.
There was something incredibly special about standing inside that church. For just a few moments, I felt connected to the history, the people, the faith, and all the stories that had taken place within those walls.
Joyce, this lovely guide, walked back to the bus with me and I left with a feeling of gratitude—and a story I certainly wasn’t expecting to take home with me. ❤️
Sometimes the most meaningful moments of a journey are the ones you never planned.
