Well done!

Indian-origin Amol Kohli, who began his career as a waiter at Friendly’s in 2003, has acquired the iconic US restaurant chain, marking a full-circle journey.

Kohli’s investment group, Legacy Brands, announced on July 22 that it had purchased Friendly’s, its parent company Brix Holdings, and six other restaurant brands for an undisclosed sum.

The deal extends Friendly’s legacy, with locations across the U.S. East Coast, under Kohli’s leadership.

Kohli, 37, started at Friendly’s earning about $5 an hour while still in high school, taking on roles from cook to dishwasher and server.

Even while studying finance and marketing at Drexel University, he continued working at the chain, learning operations such as payroll, insurance, and food costs.

After graduating in 2011, Kohli chose to stay with Friendly’s, first as a regional manager and later as a franchise owner. He eventually expanded to operate 31 franchise locations before buying the brand outright.

The entire technology and IT industry is in shock after US President Donald Trump announced a massive five-year hike for H-1B visas.

As per the newly imposed regulations, the companies that are recruiting foreign professionals will now have to submit $1,00,000 payment for each H-1B application.

After Trump’s announcement, many tech giants such as Microsoft, Amazon, Meta and others have asked their employees to return to the US by September 21.

Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has urged Indian techies to ‘come back to India to rebuild’.

In a post shared on the social media platform X, Vembu drew parallels with the Partition of India to explain the current H-1B situation.
He mentioned the experiences of his Sindhi friends whose families were forced to leave everything, but they eventually thrived after starting over again.

“I have heard so many accounts from Sindhi friends about how their families had to leave everything and come to India during partition,” Vembu said. “They rebuilt their lives and Sindhis have done well in India.”

Vembu himself worked in the US and returned to India to build Zoho into a global SaaS powerhouse.

“I am sad to say this, but for Indians on an H1-B visa in America, this may be that time. Come back home. It may take 5 years to rebuild your lives but it will make you stronger. Do not live in fear. Make the bold move. You will do well,” wrote the Zoho founder.

He further suggested that the present visa turmoil can be a turning point for Indian talent.

Vembu said that India today offers multiple opportunities as compared to the past. He also added that those willing to leap will ultimately benefit from it.

In Singapore, a unique fleet of “food redistribution taxis” is turning food waste into life-saving support — one ride at a time. These taxis don’t ferry passengers, but something just as precious: surplus meals from weddings, corporate events, and buffets that would otherwise be thrown away. Within an hour of pick-up, this untouched food reaches neighborhood food banks and community kitchens, still hot and ready to serve.

The system is built on speed and coordination. Once an event ends, volunteers or event organizers log the leftover quantities on an app. The nearest food redistribution taxi is dispatched in minutes. These drivers, often retirees or part-time gig workers, are trained in hygienic handling and quick delivery, ensuring the meals stay fresh and safe.

The impact is remarkable. Each delivery feeds dozens — sometimes hundreds — of people in need. From elderly residents living alone to low-income families and migrant workers, these meals provide both nourishment and dignity. It’s a model that tackles food waste, hunger, and carbon emissions all at once.

Singapore’s tech-driven approach makes the system scalable and efficient. Real-time tracking, AI-powered route optimization, and strict hygiene monitoring help maintain quality at every step. It’s a shining example of how cities can use everyday infrastructure — like taxis — to drive powerful social change.
