We woke up at 4 AM and walked out onto the frozen expanse of Lake Ilmen, and the cold was brutal in the dark! 🥶🇷🇺

But watching that unbelievable sunrise completely alone on the ice made the freezing toes 100% worth it. There is something so peaceful about the sound of crunching snow and grinding ice while the rest of the world is asleep.

The perfect end to the morning was bringing the fresh catch home and making a huge pot of traditional Russian Ucha (fish soup)—which the wives definitely appreciated! 🥣🐟

Are we the worst tourists ever? 😅🍕 Read until the end...

Back in August we spent a few days in Cody, Wyoming, the undisputed rodeo capital of the world and the home of Buffalo Bill. As two Swiss travelers, the culture shock was real in the best way possible! 🇨🇭🤠

Here is what our reality actually looked like that week:

🚐The Reality Check: Before the fun started, we had to cram into a packed city RV park just to do endless loads of laundry and take a desperately needed long shower. 🧺🚿

📡The Upgrades: Remember our neighbour Sam in Lander who had the ultimate off-grid setup? We decided to chase that "Sam level" freedom! 🏆 Cody was our package hub to pick up our new Starlink and solar generator. We immediately tested it by boondocking 15 minutes outside the city in the desert-like hills. High winds + new solar + watching TV in the middle of nowhere = we are officially off-grid! ☀️

🐎 The Wild West: This town is exactly what Europeans think America looks like. Daily street gunfights, endless cowboy shops, and the massive Buffalo Bill Center. We even walked through a museum with 4,000 fi****ms - a uniquely American experience!

🍕The Confession: We were scheduled to go to the famous summer Rodeo. But after a long day of exploring, we were so exhausted that we skipped the cowboys and went to a chic Italian restaurant for pizza and wine instead. We couldn't resist a little taste of Europe! 🍷

Today we left the palaces behind and went to our happy place. We took the metro down the Memory Lane north to Akademicheskaya, the neighborhood where we lived, studied, worked and - most importantly - where we fell in love over a decade ago.

🚈Travel Fact: Did you know St. Petersburg has the deepest metro system in the world by average depth? The escalators are so long (up to 100m!) that people usually read a book or finish a coffee while riding them.

Seeing the Polytech university and the house where we used to live together for the very first time felt like stepping back in time.
