Here are the Top 4 Stories from last week from the Coeur d’Alene Press.

In Post Falls, City Council unanimously approved a budget that includes a 4% property tax increase and a one-year 3% increase from the city’s existing foregone property tax balance.

In Kootenai County, Undersheriff Brett Nelson resigned from his position. The sheriff’s office confirmed his departure but said no further information would be released.

In Coeur d’Alene, an appeal was submitted against the approved preliminary plat for Coeur Terre 2, a major development proposed for the western edge of the city.

And across North Idaho, road projects continued to frustrate drivers, but officials said the work is needed to improve safety, reduce congestion and keep up with regional growth.

When Randy Reed's grandson was 2 years old, he called butterflies "wow-wows."

Eventually, the reason why became clear. As people entered the Butterfly Haven, the butterfly sanctuary Reed runs with his family in the small, unincorporated community of Pingree in southern Idaho, they would point to the insects and exclaim, "Wow!"

Hundreds of butterflies drifted and floated about inside the large enclosure, sometimes resting on the walls, which are made of netting, on brightly-colored flowers or even on the visitors who had a chance to feed them. Unlike some of the human visitors, Reed said the butterflies didn't mind the hot...

The Northern Lakes Fire Protection Board announced the approval of a two-year $4.5 million temporary levy proposal according to a Tuesday press release.

The proposed two-year, temporary property tax levy rate is projected to increase to $99.26 per $100,000 of taxable assessed value, a $5.88 increase from the current $93.38 per $100,000 of taxable assessed value.

After county commissioners blocked Kootenai County Assessor Bèla Kovacs' attempt to invalidate political rival Allyson Knapp's homestead exemption on her Rathdrum property, the assessor appealed to the Idaho Board of Tax Appeals, which affirmed the county's decision in an order issued late last week.

Kootenai County assessor had challenged political rival's residency.

The Idaho School Benefit Trust on Thursday afternoon notified member school districts and charters that the trust needs an additional $13 million to pay claims for the current benefit year, and the first payment is due at the end of next month.
