NYPA joins the Long Island community in remembering and honoring Ed Norris, longtime co-publisher of The Garden City News and several other community newspapers, who passed away on Thanksgiving morning at the age of 62.

Ed embodied the very spirit of local journalism and was always deeply invested in the communities he served. Together with his wife, Meg Norris, Ed co-published several Long Island community newspapers, carrying forward a family legacy in journalism. The Norris family’s work helped and will continue to help create community connection and exemplify the essential role of local news in everyday life.

Ed’s legacy lives on in the pages of the newspapers he helped shape and in the communities he served so faithfully.

Today’s Publisher Highlight features The Post-Star ⭐️

Winter has officially arrived in Upstate NY! The Post-Star has reported 2 inches already on the ground in Queensbury, with 4–9 inches forecasted as the storm continues on throughout the day.

We love showcasing updated local reporting like this. Know a publication we should highlight next? Let us know in the comments! Stay warm out there!

Our first major winter storm of the season so far has put just about 2 inches of snow down in Queensbury as of 11 a.m., but more is expected, with estimated totals now ranging from 4 to 9 inches.
Share your pics of today's storm! Send them to [email protected] for potential publication in the Thursday print edition.

A new year is around the corner... so, here are 5 ways your publication can get ahead before January hits:

1. Review your 2025 wins & challenges:
Take note of what worked and what didn’t across circulation, strategy, community engagement, etc... (an up-to-date SWOT analysis might not be a bad idea!)

2. Refresh your digital presence:
Audit your website and social channels. Small UX fixes can boost traffic and reader conversions.

3. Identify new revenue streams:
Sponsored content, events, or maybe a newsletter... See what your community has been asking for.

4. Update your policy & legislative priorities:
The legislative session begins soon. Make sure your outlet and business teams are aligned on what issues may impact coverage and operations.

5. Reconnect with your community:
Start scheduling Q1 outreach, like potential new business partnerships, school visits, community columns, e-newsletters, etc...

Press Term of the Week: DOUBLE TRUCK 📰

Nope, it’s not a moving van or a semi-truck… it’s when a story or layout spreads across two facing pages in the middle of a newspaper or magazine. Think of it as giving a story or ad the prime, central space it deserves. From big features to eye-catching visuals, a double truck is all about impact.

Fun Fact: The name comes from old-school printing presses, where two pages were mounted on a “truck” to print together.

So… what’s the most unforgettable double truck your newsroom has run? Drop your story or a pic in the comments!

Meet Rich Hotaling! 🥸

Rich has been in the newspaper industry for over 20 years and is the king of creative and graphic design here at NYPA & NYPS. What he is able to create is truly nothing short of magic. Our NewsBeat? Rich designs it! Our ads? Rich creates them!

While the rest of us are clutching coffee cups trying to survive the mornings, Rich powers through the day with zero caffeine and 100% pure creative energy. (We still don't understand how he does it.)

If you ask Rich to describe himself in just 3 emojis, he would say: 🚘 🚴🏼‍♂️ 🎩 which honestly fits him perfectly. Cars, biking, and the world's best hat collection pretty much sum up his vibe. But his real irrational passion? His unbelievable shoe collection (shown)... Yes, all those boxes are his shoes!

We asked Rich if he had a theme song, what would it be, and he didn't surprise us. A classic: "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey. Upbeat and timeless. Suits him to a T!

Of all his accomplishments, the one he's most proud of is raising and loving his family, and right there tells you everything you need to know about Rich.

Rich, thank you for being such a meaningful part of NYPA & NYPS. We're beyond grateful for your energy, humor, creativity, hats, and most importantly, your dedication that you bring to our team every day!
