This is Jesse Sample. Last night, I attended the Schaghticoke Fair with a couple friends. I watched all sorts of people walk around and actively choose the experience that they wanted. Some people went straight to the rides and some people went straight to the sausage and peppers line. Some folks wanted to walk through the livestock section and some folks went straight to the beer garden. The distant roar of the tractor pull shook the air in fiery intervals. There was no way for me to wrap my head around how much there was to do.
I had my ticket and I could go see whatever I wanted. There were hundreds of rides, performances, contests and food trucks. It was exciting.
You can’t do it all so you gotta pick. Time spent in the butterfly tent is time you don’t get to spend among the cows and the goats. If you choose the Ferris wheel, you’ll miss part of the music act. You gotta choose.
Tonight, I packed up my studio and went over to visit my friend and bandmate, Bear. We unpacked and we went to work in his kitchen. We made choices and made tracks. We mic’d pianos and we hammered out song parts. We had some slamming drum tracks courtesy of Jim dooley from Jimdooley.net. And While we worked, I thought about last night and that Birdseye view afforded by the Ferris wheel, of this unlikely Las Vegas erected in town who’s name I can never spell right. A remember the sound of revving engines. I can still smell the fried dough and taste the fresh squeezed lemonade.
Last night, I also got to walk among people who make food. It occurs to me that I don’t often take the time to fully appreciate where food comes from. When I go to Hannaford to buy a pound of beef and some frozen peas, I don’t often consider the hard-working men and women who work the land and make all of this possible. Tonight, This one’s for the farmers.
