A Night to Remember: WIJMS Spring Choral Concert Review
May 21, 2025
Written by a proud parent and community member~ Gabrielle Fedora

Tonight’s William J. Johnston Middle School Spring Choral Concert was nothing short of magical. Under the direction of the ever-inspiring Mrs. Lynn Goodwin, with the talented Kim Lewis accompanying, our students filled the auditorium with music that moved the heart and stirred the soul.

The evening opened with the 6th Grade Chorus, whose rendition of Bonse Aba set a powerful tone~joyful, strong, and grounded in unity. From Fly Away Home to Have It All, and closing with Lift Me Up and Plaudite by Victor C. Johnson, these young performers showcased a range of emotion and skill. Special recognition to soloists Melody Shonk and Ava Lizondro-Pane~their voices soared with poise and passion.

The Chamber Choir, featuring soloist Abbie Barthel, brought a refined and emotional depth to the stage. As a parent of a Chamber Choir member, I’ve seen firsthand how much work, time, and love goes into preparing for a night like this. Mrs. Goodwin has been a steadfast leader, gently challenging her students to grow~not just as singers, but as confident young people who believe in their own voices.

The 8th Grade Chorus delivered a particularly poignant performance of A Million Dreams, arranged by Mac Huff, with soloists Jacob Gauthier, Madison Liberty, and Charlotte Smith lending their unique strengths to this inspiring anthem. It was a reminder of the hopes and potential carried in the hearts of our young people.

When the 7th and 8th Grade Chorus took the stage, their performance of Eneza Upendo and Ten Thousand Miles transported us through languages, cultures, and deep emotion. Roots Before Branches brought tears to more than a few eyes, especially as soloists Seraphina Gruss and Jemma Currier delivered heartfelt, powerful performances.

The evening concluded with a moving performance of We Will Rise Up Together by the Combined Choirs, which was also a touching tribute to retiring Principal Mr. Bennett. The heartfelt applause said it all~our community is better because of the educators who nurture not only academic excellence but the arts, empathy, and resilience in our children.

This concert wasn’t just a display of musical talent~it was a celebration of growth, unity, and the beautiful diversity of our town. Thank you, Mrs. Goodwin, for keeping the beauty of music alive in our schools. And thank you to every student who had the courage to stand on that stage and share their light with us.

What a gift it is to witness the future of Colchester in such strong, creative hands.

Passing the Torch: A New Chapter for The Colchester Beacon

For years, Good News Colchester has been a trusted source of uplifting stories, local highlights, and meaningful community discussions. Founded by Arnold Ewings, it became a go-to space for those seeking quality information without bias, a place where Colchester’s residents could find connection and positivity. Today, we honor that legacy as we take the next step forward—rebranding as The Colchester Beacon, a name that reflects our commitment to shining a light on our community with integrity, heart, and an even greater focus on local engagement.

Honoring the Legacy

Arnold Ewings started Good News Colchester out of frustration with the divisiveness often found in local online spaces. His goal was to create something different:

“I was tired of the insane, irrelevant information on local pages that were often one-sided—too far left, too far right. All they did was open the door to a barrage of insults that had no place in an argument,” Arnold explains.

Originally, he launched Good Neighbor Colchester, a page meant to inspire small acts of kindness—loaning a ladder, bringing in a neighbor’s garbage cans, or gifting an item to someone in need. But it wasn’t until a dramatic shift in another local gifting group that his vision took off. Overnight, what had been a small group of 40 people exploded into hundreds.

From there, Good News Colchester was born with the aim of bringing back the spirit of a traditional hometown newspaper—factual, balanced, and community-driven.

Like any pioneering effort, there were challenges. Arnold and his team worked to keep discussions civil, moderate content responsibly, and ensure that stories fit within the mission of constructive local engagement. But despite the hurdles, the platform made a lasting impact.

One of Arnold’s proudest moments?

“The time we helped someone in need get a car. That was huge. It felt like we were truly making a difference.”

Arnold also takes pride in knowing that Good News Colchester became a trusted resource—one that people referenced in meetings and conversations, often without even realizing he was behind it.

The Next Chapter: Why The Colchester Beacon?

After years of leading Good News Colchester and Colchester Media Group, Arnold felt the time was right to step back and focus on other priorities, including his work as an EMT and spending more time with his family. But he wanted to ensure that the spirit of what he built would continue.

“I realized that some of my priorities, like faith and family, were reenergized during my time away. And I also realized that a leader should always do a job so well that it leads itself out of it.”

With that, The Colchester Beacon was born—a refined vision that retains the heart of Good News Colchester while expanding its reach. The name change reflects a broader mission: to light the way for Colchester, focusing on quality information, community-building, and meaningful discourse.

Arnold recognizes that his original title, Good News Colchester, may have unintentionally given the impression that only happy endings belonged in its stories. However, his true intent was rooted in the ancient Greek concept of a messenger bringing better news—not just feel-good stories, but well-researched, constructive, and impactful local reporting.

As part of the transition, Arnold will continue contributing to The Colchester Beacon through his beloved YesterYear series, keeping local history alive.

Meet the New Editor: A Commitment to Community

As I step into the role of editor, I want to acknowledge the solid foundation Arnold has built. My name is Gabrielle, and like Arnold, I believe in the power of local storytelling.

I moved to Colchester in 2019 with my daughter, and since then, I’ve grown my family with three more little girls. My passion for community connection runs deep-I work as an Account Manager at the sister company to S&S, run my own small business as a travel agent, and have been deeply involved in local initiatives.

I know firsthand how difficult it can be to keep up with everything happening in town. Information is often scattered across different platforms, making it hard to find what you need. My goal with The Colchester Beacon is to bring it all together—a one-stop hub where Colchester’s residents, businesses, and organizations can stay informed, engaged, and connected.

In addition to local news and community stories, The Colchester Beacon will offer:
✅ Spotlights on local businesses and events
✅ Support for PTOs, nonprofits, and community initiatives
✅ Affordable marketing services for small businesses
✅ Constructive discussions on what matters to Colchester

Looking Ahead

Arnold leaves us with this advice:

“Keep the core mission intact—Colchester-centered community building through quality information sharing and meaningful discourse.”

That is exactly what I intend to do.

The Colchester Beacon is not just a news source—it’s a reflection of our town, our people, and the good we can accomplish when we work together. We are rooted in community, growing together.

Get Involved—Your Voice Matters!

At The Colchester Beacon, we believe that the best stories come from the people who live them. Whether you want to highlight a community initiative, share an upcoming event, or nominate a small business for a feature, we want to hear from you! You can message our page anytime with ideas or stories that deserve the spotlight.

For those looking to get more involved, we also have a volunteer sign-up for anyone interested in contributing—whether it’s helping with research, writing, event coverage, or even just sharing insights about what’s happening in town. You can participate as much or as little as you feel comfortable, because after all, community involvement makes for a diverse and beautiful representation of our shared values and local fabric. Let’s build something amazing together!
