🏠 Housing reform is heating up in Burlington 🏠

The Progressive caucus on City Council is rolling out new proposals aimed at tackling the city’s housing crisis.

Plans include:
🔹 Growing the city’s Housing Trust Fund by $1M through a property transfer tax
🔹 Requiring UVM to keep part of student housing affordable for low-income students
🔹 Using the new state CHIP program to build permanently affordable homes
🔹 Pushing for a city charter change to allow rent stabilization

Councilor Gene Bergman said, “We’ve got to make sure housing is a human right, not a commodity.”

But not everyone agrees — Burlington Democrats say while they share many of the same goals, they’re unsure some of these proposals will actually lead to the growth and stability the city needs.

COLCHESTER, Vt. – A new state record was set this weekend at the Annual Vermont Giant Pumpkin Growers Weigh-Off at Sam Mazza’s Farm.

James Bean of Bakersfield took the top prize with a pumpkin weighing in at 1,814 pounds, the heaviest ever recorded at the event.

The weigh-off drew crowds who came to see not only pumpkins but also giant sunflowers, tomatoes, and other oversized produce. Families enjoyed the festival atmosphere, cheering on competitors and celebrating Vermont’s fall harvest season.

The event has become a seasonal tradition, highlighting the dedication of growers and the spirit of community that comes with it.

Jerry Greenfield Exits Ben & Jerry’s After 47 Years, Citing Loss of Independence

EAST DORSET, Vt. — After nearly five decades with Ben & Jerry’s, co-founder Jerry Greenfield is leaving the iconic ice cream brand, saying its independence to address social issues has been curtailed under parent company Unilever.

In a letter shared by co-founder Ben Cohen on social media, Greenfield lamented the loss of the brand’s ability to speak out on peace, justice, and human rights. He said the independence guaranteed by the original merger agreement with Unilever is now gone, leaving the company “silenced, sidelined for fear of upsetting those in power.”

“For more than 20 years, Ben & Jerry’s stood up for human rights in relation to real events happening in our world,” Greenfield wrote. “The real test of values is when times are challenging and you have something to lose.”

Greenfield emphasized that Ben & Jerry’s has always been about more than ice cream — it was a platform to spread love and fight for equity and justice.

Unilever, which acquired Ben & Jerry’s in 2000, is spinning off its ice cream business, including Ben & Jerry’s, into a stand-alone company called The Magnum Ice Cream Company. Greenfield and Cohen have advocated for the brand to return to independent ownership, arguing that corporate control undermines its founding mission.

A spokesperson for Magnum thanked Greenfield for his contributions but stated that they disagreed with his perspective and continue to support the company’s values.

Tensions between Ben & Jerry’s and Unilever have been ongoing. In March, Ben & Jerry’s sued Unilever in federal court, claiming the parent company unlawfully removed CEO David Stever and blocked statements on topics including Palestinian rights, climate change, and social issues.

Despite the disputes, Ben & Jerry’s remains a globally recognized brand, known for its creative flavors like Cherry Garcia and Phish Food, and for intertwining business with social activism.
