🏠Housing reform is heating up in Burlington đźŹ
The Progressive caucus on City Council is rolling out new proposals aimed at tackling the city’s housing crisis.
Plans include:
🔹 Growing the city’s Housing Trust Fund by $1M through a property transfer tax
🔹 Requiring UVM to keep part of student housing affordable for low-income students
🔹 Using the new state CHIP program to build permanently affordable homes
🔹 Pushing for a city charter change to allow rent stabilization
Councilor Gene Bergman said, “We’ve got to make sure housing is a human right, not a commodity.”
But not everyone agrees — Burlington Democrats say while they share many of the same goals, they’re unsure some of these proposals will actually lead to the growth and stability the city needs.
