⚠️🌊 Lake life & storm season. It's not always pretty, but preparedness is important! Living on the water is one of the best parts of summer, but lakes can also leave us more exposed when severe weather rolls in. As storm season ramps up across Michiana, here are a few simple safety and security reminders to keep your family, guests, and lake property protected:

✔️ Know where you'll go. Have a plan for shelter before severe weather arrives. Basements are best, but an interior room on the lowest level is the next safest option.
✔️ Get off the water early. If you hear thunder, it's time to head for shore. Lightning can strike miles ahead of a storm, and conditions can change rapidly on open water.
✔️ Secure loose items. Patio furniture, umbrellas, dock accessories, kayaks, and floating toys can quickly become airborne projectiles in strong winds.
✔️ Keep a weather radio or charged device handy. Don't rely solely on outdoor warning sirens—they're designed to alert people outdoors, not inside your home or cottage.
✔️ Check your dock and boat lines. A few minutes spent securing equipment before a storm can save a lot of headaches afterward.
✔️ Prepare for power outages. Keep flashlights, extra batteries, bottled water, and a backup phone charger readily available.
✔️ Look out for your lake neighbors. Many seasonal residents may not be nearby when storms hit. A quick check-in can go a long way.

When the Tebben family shared the story of their annual fishing trip with us, we knew readers would want to sink their hooks into it. What started as a father taking his sons fishing more than 60 years ago has grown into a beloved tradition that now brings together 45+ Tebben relatives each year for a week of fishing, laughs, cards, memories, and lake-life camaraderie.

In fact, the family loved seeing their story in print so much that they reserved 100 copies of the magazine to share with family members—a testament to just how meaningful this tradition has become across four generations. 🥰 Stories like the Tebben Fishing Trip are exactly why we love what we do at Lake Access Magazine.
