Long before there was a “What’s Up With The Girls?” Deb and I were already having adventures together. This is one we have never forgotten. 🇺🇸
Twenty-five years ago, we had won a trip to Turks & Caicos. September 11, 2001 was supposed to be the day we flew home.
We made our way to the front desk, ready to leave for the airport, when we were told to go back to our rooms. Something had happened in the United States. No one knew when we would be able to fly home.
We went back to our room and watched everything unfold on a television screen from an island hundreds of miles away.
We called our parents. I can still remember my mother saying the words, “America is under attack.”
Suddenly, our vacation didn’t matter.
Getting home didn’t matter.
We were watching something happen that we knew, even then, would change our country forever.
We remained in Turks & Caicos until we were finally able to make our way home. And when we did, the world of travel we returned to looked very different from the one we had left.
During our connection in Miami, there were dogs checking luggage, heavily armed security throughout the airport, and an atmosphere unlike anything we had experienced before. Our journey home eventually took us through Newark, where our parents were waiting for us.
We were incredibly fortunate. We came home.
Thousands of other families spent those same days realizing someone they loved never would.
That’s what we remember most today.
Before YouTube. Before social media. Before anyone was asking “What’s Up With The Girls?” — there were two best friends out exploring the world together.
And of all the adventures we’ve shared, this is one that has stayed with us for 25 years.
Today we remember those who were lost, those who ran toward danger, the families whose lives changed forever, and a day that changed all of us.
September 11, 2001. Never forgotten. 🇺🇸❤️
