📅 November 16, 1776 | 249 years ago today, General George Washington (Virginia’s own) suffered one of the darkest moments of his New York campaign at the Battle of Fort Washington.
Despite early success holding the Hudson River, the outnumbered American garrison of 3,000 men was overwhelmed by a combined British and Hessian force of 8,000. By afternoon, Colonel Robert Magaw had no choice but to surrender, and nearly 2,800 Continental soldiers were captured.
For Washington, watching helplessly from across the river, it was a devastating loss. Yet out of defeat came resilience, the Continental Army endured, regrouped, and would go on to victories that changed the course of history.
