June 2001 — I was just a 14-year-old small-town Colorado girl on a school trip to New York City and Washington D.C. Life felt simple and safe. I was wide-eyed, taking pictures of everything, including this one of the towers, never imagining how quickly the world could change.
Just three months later, on September 11, 2001, our country was forever changed. At the time, I couldn’t fully grasp the immensity of what was happening. As an adult, I carry a much deeper understanding of the weight of that day, the heaviness we all felt, and the 2,977 lives that were lost.
Today, I pause to remember exactly where I was when I first heard the news, to honor the innocent lives taken, and to reflect on the courage of those who responded.
🇺🇸 We will never forget.
