Despite what you might think, the red-eyed tree frog’s huge eyes don’t just serve to improve its vision. Oversized, bright red irises are actually a form of self-defense. By abruptly popping open its eyes and startling an approaching predator, this tree frog gains a few precious seconds to hop away to safety. Photo taken at Miller Park Zoo.
