The honor of a lifetime.

This weekend, we got to travel with 56 veterans to Washington, D.C. on Honor Flight 20. This was a free trip for WWII, Korea, and Vietnam veterans to the nation's capital to see the war memorials recognizing their service.

I learned so much from these men and women and am so grateful to each and every one of them who opened up and shared their stories with me. Many of these veterans carry a lot of guilt and shame about their time overseas. The Honor Flight gives them a chance to heal.

Here are a few touching moments from this trip. Thank you, Honor Flight of Southern Colorado KOAA 5

So fun to stop by this youth discussion at The Colorado Springs School on MLK Jr. Day!

This day serves as an opportunity to teach younger generations about Dr. King and his legacy. That was the purpose of one youth panel at the Colorado Springs...

Giving kids a second chance to get on the right path.

That's what one Colorado Springs nonprofit has been doing for 30 YEARS through its Teen Court Program.

A group of teen volunteers work together to give out sentences to juveniles accused of committing misdemeanor crimes (shoplifting, using drugs/alcohol, etc.)

I sat in on one of their Tuesday night panels last week and quickly realized honesty and accountability are at the forefront of the process, not judgment. KOAA 5

A rise in smash-and-grab burglaries across Colorado Springs is stirring up frustration for local business owners and law enforcement, as juvenile suspects continue to find their way back out on the street after arrests.

I sat down with the Colorado Springs Police Chief and 4th Judicial District Attorney to talk about solutions. KOAA 5

What does the future of malls in Colorado Springs look like?

I sat down with a few business owners to discuss just that, as crime rates and store vacancies continue to affect The Citadel and Chapel Hills Mall. KOAA 5

Tali’Ja Campbell sat down with me to talk about the day her husband was killed in a murder-suicide last summer in Colorado Springs.

Police took more than an hour to respond to her call for help, which she says could’ve made the difference in saving his life. KOAA 5

Here's her story:

UCCS SHOOTING SUSPECT IN COURT:

Several police officers testified today about the two victims' injuries, the arguments leading up to the shooting, and what was revealed during a police interview with the suspect.

The two shooting victims were 24-year-old Samuel Knopp and 26-year-old Celie Montgomery. Knopp was a senior at UCCS studying music and was an accomplished guitarist. Montgomery was not a student and her friends describe her as a loving mother. KOAA 5

NEW: Colorado Springs city leaders say they're ready to address crime at The Citadel Mall.

But, why now after years of concern from residents?

One city councilmember says it's because they finally have the mall's owner on board.

Since 2016, at least three people have died and more than 20 others have been injured in shootings inside and on the mall's property. KOAA 5

UCCS is without a Police Chief, Housing Director, and Emergency Manager as of last month.

We were notified by a concerned student who noticed the staffing changes. She said UCCS is not being upfront about the "quiet" leadership changes in the wake of a double homicide on campus in February.

"It's hard to not feel like it looks bad and like they're hiding something from you," said Josie Gimmestad, a UCCS Junior.

She said students shouldn't have to "go looking" for important changes in positions that deal with campus safety.

NEW: UCCS confirmed its campus police chief, housing director, and emergency management director all left their positions in July.

This comes after student calls for increased campus safety following a double homicide in a dorm room in February. KOAA 5

UCCS confirmed the campus police chief, housing director, and emergency management program director all left the university in July.

The suspected gunman who killed two people inside a UCCS dorm room in February was found competent to stand trial.

A judge made the decision during a court hearing on Friday, which ended months of back and forth about the suspect's mental state.

I sat down with a friend of one of the shooting victims who told me this is a big step forward in the case. KOAA 5
