How to Make Charcoal
A Simple Guide for Home and Garden Use.
Making your own charcoal can be a rewarding project that provides natural, eco-friendly fuel and a valuable soil additive for your garden. With just a few supplies and some outdoor space, you can create homemade charcoal using the traditional burn method. Here are the steps to get started.
Steps:
1. Gather Hardwood: Use dry, hardwood pieces like oak or hickory, which produce high-quality charcoal.
2. Prepare a Metal Drum:Drill small holes in the drum for ventilation if using a kiln, or place wood in a simple metal container.
3. Build a Fire: Place your wood in the container and light a fire over it, allowing it to burn slowly with limited oxygen.
4. Control the Burn: Cover the container with a lid once the wood chars, reducing air to slow the burn and convert wood to charcoal.
5. Cool and Collect: Once cool, open the container and collect the charcoal, which is ready for use as fuel or in your garden.
DIY charcoal can enhance soil health and is a sustainable option for outdoor cooking. Give it a try and share your results!
