This piece came directly from my unconscious psyche. No planning just cutting a seven foot oak log that I stood on end. After I finished I decided it was a dancer, and named it after my daughter Victoria Roberts-wierzbowski It is in the collection of
Greenfield Community College.

The best of my wood sculptures, the pieces that I feel are real "art" come from my unconscious psyche. There is no conscious thinking I do what is called direct carving.

Sometimes I find a piece of wood that I can consciously make into something. I found two such pieces, butt ends of a hundred year pine tree next to my long gone neighbor Mr. Smead.

I took these two pieces of wood and made them into two balls (more or less) and called them "Mr. Smeads Balls". When people hear the name they laugh. Freud pointed this out in his Analysis of the Joke -- that jokes happen when you put two things on the same plane at the same time and a person will laugh and have an emotional response. He said that art was the same way.

I bought and had a twelve foot mahogany log shipped to me from Belize - I went out to a sawmill near the Guatamalan border and picked out a log.

With no Idea of what I would make I cut the log up into five pieces creating the Mahogony Family - This is the Baby in the collection of Jim Ottaway -

I make two types of sculptures --- the purist ar unplanned shapes that I believe come from my unconscious psyche. The other are jokes. This is one of those jokes. Conscious decisions to make something.

I got the two butt ends of a hundred year old pine tree from my neighbor farmer. I decided that I should make to big balls. I called them Mr. Smeads Balls after my long gone neighbor.

I sold one the other sits in an old Bank in Greenfield Mass. I restored two buildings in Greenfield which are now a 30,000 square foot arts center now called Hawks and Reed Performing Arts Center

The plan was always to restore this bank across the street as another part of the arts center. The furthest I got was storing one of Mr. Smead's Balls there, the hope being that like a seed it will grow the building into another arts building in Greenfield.
