Montana Woman Magazine

Montana Woman Magazine We all have a story to tell.

We publish a statewide magazine every other month that features women across Montana— the movers and shakers, the go-getters, the rule-breakers, the risk-takers.

a update from your local editor ♥️

At this point, I feel like I’ve done everything within my power to try to keep things going. Sometimes things just end.

It’s hard, because I’ve poured so much of myself into this magazine (five years!! the whole second half of my twenties). It was my first business, what felt like my first “real” job—something I so wholeheartedly loved doing.

But you can’t pour from an empty cup.

No amount of love for the magazine can change the financial aspect of it. Printing costs are well over double what they were from the first issue I published, same goes for freight and shipping.

I would love to see it continue, but I can’t do another five months of having everything in limbo. So here we are.

Thank you for being here, for being part of this community, for your support and encouragement—it never would have made it this far without y’all. I’m sorry we didn’t get to share more stories, but there are more incredible people here doing amazing things than there are pages in a lifetime.

If you want to stay in the loop, you can find me over at or the vintage shop I run with my mom, Carrie, at .

I’ll probably share some old/archived things here still, and I want to put more previous articles up on the blog because there’s so much more than what’s been posted.

love y’all ♥️

Things are afoot!

I wanted to share another update because 1). I’ve been meaning to and 2). we had a lot of new subscribers sign up when the Kelly Clarkson show aired last year, which means renewals, which means folks wondering what’s going on.

There’s some updates—not a ton, but things are looking good!!

some poetry for your feed 🌌

I’m working on adding the rest of my poem prints to the mag’s website (the last one was from issue 16, almost three years ago). There are still a lot to add, but !!! it’s been so fun to go back and read these again. Sometimes I forget how massive this body of work is because I’m used to working from one issue to the next—it’s been a bit since I’ve sat back and looked at it as a whole.

Anyway—I’ll let y’all know when more prints are up. Thank you for being here (forever & always) ♥️

Issue 33: Salus / The Protector. Featuring Keely Perkins (). Written & photographed by Kelsey Merritt ().

“On a rather busy street corner for Miles City, Montana, at the intersection of Main and 7th Street sits the historic Bison Bar. A long, brick and cinderblock building showing stories of fires and re-builds and far more than a hundred years’ worth of history, the signature of the tan and unassuming building has long been its vintage neon sign. Bathing the street in green, red, and pink and the promises of a cold beer inside, the iconic Bison Bar sign now illuminates a mural that sprawls across the northeast wall of the building. ”

Subscriptions have been sent, and I’ll be reaching out to distributors next. You can also find this issue online at montanawoman.com/shop, and I’ll be dropping copies around the Flathead Valley over the next few days.

The last one—thank you for being here ♥️

A poem for when summer slowly slips into autumn 🌔

We’ve had regular afternoon/evening storms in the Flathead for the last few days, and those breezes are staring to feel more and more cool & northern and I’m downright giddy about it.

for the love of writing 🤍

A major shoutout to the moms of this amazing group of writers: Sara, Caitlin, Carla, and Alyson. Thank you for encouraging your daughters to send work to the magazine—y’all are wonderful!

The upcoming September/October issue marks a full year of Hattie writing for the magazine (!!), which means one year of the sweetest stories at my desk. The imagination of a young writer is always so refreshing. I absolutely love getting to read these stories and design big ole fancy layouts—I hope you like getting to read them, too!

stories featured:
-Carmen & Flo, Hattie Smith (issue 31)
-Fox and Willow, Saoirse Mallery (issue 31)
-When All Water Came Down the Mountains, Reese Kushner (issue 31)
-Laughter Kills Lonesome, Evelyne Dorr (issue 29)

who we are

Montana Woman Magazine as you know it began in October 2019. Right out of the gate with photographer Alexis Pike as the first cover feature— clad in fringe pants and a motorcycle helmet in a Bozeman alleyway— we’ve always been authentically ourselves. We believe in showing up as you are. You don’t need to change who you are to have a seat at the table. No matter your age, your identity, your hometown, you are welcome here. We believe in creating a publication that’s worth reading because we have stories worth telling.
