Happy Sunday morning! 6:18 a.m. on the Niangua, looking toward the 5 Bridge. The September transition to the calm we all call the “Off season.”

We couldn’t think of anywhere else we’d rather be. Owned here. Operated here. Committed to here.

In the busy world we all live in, take a moment to appreciate the dramatic, not the drama. The Ozarks is definitely one of the best places to live.

And who knows… maybe one day we’ll even make house calls by boat?

Upon returning home this evening, my daughter informed me that her friend and fellow 7th grader was late to second-hour PE at Osage Middle School today.

The reason? Said friend wanted to be part of her puppy’s vaccine appointment this morning… and then decided to stick around to watch a quick surgery.

So, to her teachers: please accept our sincerest apologies for contributing to the delinquency of Lake area youth by providing an education outside the classroom. 🤣

We’ll try to keep the hands-on learning from interfering with PE next time.

No promises.

However, we can be bribed with those little cartons of chocolate milk…

We picked up an extra shotgun rider this morning! Diesel is headed to hang out with Dad at his shop today, after we helped him out with a quick cherry eye repair early this morning.

Cherry eye happens when the tear-producing gland of a dog’s third eyelid pops out of its normal position, creating that noticeable red or pink bump in the inner corner of the eye. Rather than removing this important gland, we typically want to preserve it and tuck it back into place using a Morgan pocket technique. The gland is placed into a small surgically created pocket in the surrounding tissue and secured back where it belongs, allowing it to continue doing its important job of producing tears.

The Morgan pocket technique is successful most of the time, although occasionally the gland can pop back out and need a second repair. In cases where it continues to cause problems despite repair, removal may be considered,!though preserving that tear-producing tissue whenever possible is the goal.

A quick fix, a stylish cone, and now Diesel gets to spend the rest of the day supervising Dad at the shop.

Anesthetic procedures and bloodwork, literally at your front door? Yup, we do that! For Stella this morning… bloodwork and a dental, and back awake and running around in less than 45 minutes.

No driving back and forth. No dropping off the night before. No rearranging your entire day around multiple trips to the clinic. No wondering what’s going on when you’re not there.

Because veterinary care has an opportunity cost, too.

I define opportunity cost as this: Everything you choose to do, leaves something else undone.

Every trip to the clinic is time away from home, work, family, errands, or simply the things you’d rather be doing.

Does mobile veterinary care fit every patient and every scenario? Of course not. But when it does, we believe there’s a new way to deliver it.

To everyone who has joined us on this journey, thank you for trusting us as we help usher in a new model of veterinary care at Lake of the Ozarks.
