As misinformation continues to circulate around the recent Texas flooding, here are some facts.

This event was extreme, with Kerr County experiencing a 500-year flood at Camp Mystic and areas west of Austin witnessing a 1,000-year flood due to heavier storms.

This event was supported by excessive moisture linked to the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry. And as the world warms due to climate change, the atmosphere can hold more moisture, increasing the likelihood of extreme rainfall events in the future. According to Climate Central, extreme rainfall events have become 20% heavier in the last 50 years in parts of central Texas.

While more details about emergency preparedness will emerge, at this time, it is important to remember the lives lost and to offer condolences and support to those affected by this tragedy.
