Join us for a cozy afternoon of sipping, shopping, and supporting local! 📖🍷

Hi, Friends! In honor of this last weekend’s Kentucky Derby, I am so excited to share with you this beautiful historical romance by author Elaine Corum Strawn, based on the real-life romance of her grandparents.🌹

And who were Elaine’s grandparents? None other than beloved sportswriter and Former President of the Kentucky Derby, Bill Corum and his wife, Elaine “Kiddie” Kolle. Kiddie was an art student at Columbia, and Bill earned the name Major by serving in WWI as the youngest Major ever, and is also famous for coining the Derby phrase “Run for the Roses”. Elaine and her daughters were also honored this last weekend at this year’s Kentucky Derby!🌹

As both Kiddie & the Major died in the fifties, Elaine never had the chance to know her namesake and grandparents, but she does a beautiful job of honoring them by weaving other a story of devotion and love that stands the test of time. Rose.🌹

So, while, at its heart, this is a fictional historical romance, this beautiful love story is also a moving ode to the love and legacy of Kiddie and the Major. Elaine creates such an immersive atmosphere that you can just sink into, and I couldn’t help but become attached to these characters!🌹

Local author Elaine Strawn just rereleased her novel, "Kiddie and The Major" — a timely nod to her family history and the 100th anniversary of the phrase “Run for the Roses,” celebrated during this past weekend’s Kentucky Derby.📕🌹 The book reimagines the 1920s love story of her grandparents, one of whom is Bill Corum, the Mizzou alumnus and sports journalist who coined that now-famous phrase.

Off & Running is going to the 151st Kentucky Derby this weekend!

Our namesake, ‘Off & Running’, was inspired by Bill Corum’s autobiography title of the same name. The biological grandfather of OR’s founder Elaine Strawn, was a well known journalist, sports announcer, and notable decade long president of Churchill Downs, coining the phrase ‘Run for the Roses’. Off & Running aims to continue the family literary legacy. We are celebrating the weekend at and kicking off the weekend with a second edition release of Elaine Corum Strawn’s ‘Kiddie in the Major’. The novel is historical fiction and follows Bill Corum and his wife Kiddie during the 1920s. It is inspired by Bill Corum’s autobiography, private letters and diaries, and history itself.
