in 1963, Dr. Henrie (Monteith) Treadwell, James L. Solomon Jr., and Robert G. Anderson Jr. made history as the first African American students to desegregate the University of South Carolina since Reconstruction.

Dr. Treadwell’s federal court victory ended nearly 100 years of segregation at South Carolina’s flagship university.

In 2023, the University of South Carolina commemorated the 60th anniversary of this milestone by breaking ground on a 12-foot statue by renowned artist Basil Watson, unveiled in April 2024 on the historic Horseshoe in their honor.

Dr. Treadwell’s forthcoming memoir, Come Along with Me, shares her powerful journey. Learn more via The University of South Carolina Press: uscpress.com/Come-Along-with-Me
