Remove the cancer.
Leaders, one person can impact the entire productivity and morale of your team and organization. Because that’s what cancer does. It starts small. It’s invades and begins to kill the good things around it. If you notice that gossip, low morale, decreased productivity or high errors are occurring on your team. Look at yourself first. Then start checking on those that you’ve placed in leadership roles.
Here are 3 tips to remove the cancer:
1. Offer anonymity to staff members. Allow them to share their experiences to YOU. Do not allow anyone else to read their comments. YOU make sure to keep that trust between you and your team.
2. Be open. Be willing to hear the truth and hold yourself and your team accountable. Be open to recommendations and feedback. Sometimes the truth hurts.
3. Fire… fast. Every single termination is HARD. No matter how many times you have to do it, it never gets easier. Removing the cancer quickly requires tough decisions. Have objective reasoning and your facts in order. But getting rid of it as quickly as possible prevents more damage.
Teams work when everyone shares the same goal. So if someone is not in alignment with that goal, they aren’t good for the team. Remove the cancer.
