The United States will soon make its last penny after its last batch of penny blanks runs out in 2026. Production began in 1793, but its halt is expected to have little impact on everyday purchases. Only 14% of payments were done in cash in 2024, according to the Federal Reserve’s 2025 Diary of Consumer Payment Choice.

The Missouri Hospital Association released its annual workforce report this week, which surveyed workers in the industry in 2024. They found a 22.2% turnover rate, which was static from the year prior, and a 9.7% vacancy rate, down from 13.7% in 2023. Jill Williams, vice president of workforce development at MHA, said the 4% decrease in vacancy rates across the state is an indication that efforts to fill positions at hospitals are paying off.

But with recent high summer temperatures come project delays, as companies like Bulley & Andrews have had to change their regular work schedule to avoid unsafe conditions. The Missouri Department of Labor has issued guidelines for preventing heat stress, encouraging workers to drink water every 15 to 20 minutes and take regular breaks.
