Missouri lost 5,900 non-farm jobs in August, according to new data from the Department of Economic Development. Hard-hit sectors included education, healthcare and local government. Unemployment remained steady at 4.1%, coming in just under the U.S. unemployment rate of 4.3%. State unemployment numbers continue Missouri’s trend of being at or below the national unemployment average for more than 10 years. https://www.missouribusinessalert.com/economy/missouri-sheds-jobs-in-august-as-unemployment-rate-holds-steady/article_83d7913b-ec11-49ee-9076-95fdfc96f999.html

Credit card debt has nearly doubled in the U.S. since the financial crisis of 2008, and many Americans using them have seen their balances consistently rise year after year. This resulted in collective debt reaching a new record high at the end of last year, and debt in the second quarter of 2025 nearly matching that total.

Credit card debt is increasing for many Americans who use them, as a result of high interest rates and inflation.

Although Americans’ approval and support for unions have increased in recent years, union membership in Missouri is declining, raising questions about the future of organized labor in the state. With fewer members and growing government pressure, unions are facing a test of their influence and ability to advocate for workers’ rights.

Some union members and supporters worry federal cuts by the Trump administration and state election changes could hurt organized labor.

Consumer prices increased by 2.9% in August from a year earlier, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Thursday, and prices rose 0.4% in the last month. Consumer price increases in Missouri closely mirror the national trend, according to Peter Mueser, an economics professor at the University of Missouri. While the economy has moderated somewhat compared to earlier predictions of a recession by late 2025, the likelihood of a downturn has diminished but remains possible. https://www.missouribusinessalert.com/economy/consumer-prices-inch-upward-in-august-increasing-by-2-9-from-last-year/article_badca06d-147e-4ec7-a5cf-316881159fed.html
