Ten years ago today, MPA hired an outspoken young man working at the Bolivar Herald-Free Press to be editor of Missouri Press News and the weekly eBulletin. Matthew Barba has gone on to become an indispensable member of the MPA team, serving as our photographer, webmaster, tech guy, co-administrator of the annual Better Newspaper Contest, and cheerleader. Happy 10th anniversary, Matthew!

MPA President Peggy Scott, Advertising Director Ted Lawrence, and Executive Director Chad Stebbins had a busy day on Friday, visiting the Springfield Business Journal, Springfield Daily Citizen, and the Springfield News-Leader. MPA on the road: Chad Stebbins and Ted Lawrence visited the Lamar Democrat and the Nevada Daily Mail (pictured) on Thursday. The Daily Mail publishes four issues per week and has a staff of 17 full- and part-time employees. It is one of 12 newspaper printing plant operations remaining in the state and also has a digital print shop for smaller jobs. Publisher Lorie Harter has been with the paper for 22 years. MPA on the road: Ted Lawrence and Chad Stebbins had a great visit to the Lawrence County Record in Mount Vernon this morning. Main Street Media (MSM) is selling its four remaining Missouri newspapers, after having sold the Glasgow Missourian in September.

Frank Mercer, publisher of MSM, recently penned an announcement to readers of the company’s other newspapers, announcing MSM was placing its entire Missouri newspaper division up for sale. Publications included are The Carrollton Democrat, Higginsville Advance, Lexington News and Santa Fe Times, Alma.

Echo Menges, editor of the Edina Sentinel, represented MPA today at a Presiding Judges’ Education Committee meeting in Branson. The focus was on cameras in the court and reporters in the courtroom. Managing Editor Andale Gross was appointed Sept. 9 as The Kansas City Star’s next executive editor, He makes history as the first Black editor to lead the 145-year-old organization. Andale replaces Greg Farmer, who recently was named executive vice president at McClatchy Media. He has spent the past two-plus years as The Star’s managing editor. Before returning to Kansas City, Andale was the race and ethnicity editor at The Associated Press, based in Chicago. But his Missouri roots run deep. He grew up about 35 miles north of Columbia in Moberly, where he met Lisa, his high school sweetheart. Now married, they have two adult sons, Aja and Avery. Andale graduated from the University of Missouri journalism school, and his first job out of college was at The Star as a suburban reporter.
