There’s also Sweet Honey In The Rock, Randy Newman, The Staple Singers, Stevie Wonder, Rosanne Cash, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, as well as Sam Cooke, Sly & The Family Stone, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Karyn Allyson with Kurt Elling and Chris Stamey. A lot is riding on this election. I hope this little soundtrack gets you to pull the lever at the polling station, if you haven’t already voted early.

I’ve been in the mood for early-mid 70s Soul. The messages and the heart in so much of this music still has immediacy. I started with Donny Hathaway, an amazingly gifted singer, and quickly rounded up The Staple Singers, War, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Sly & The Family Stone, Ann Peebles, Isaac Hayes, Isley Brothers, Average White Band, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and some great live Marvin Gaye debuting the music from his then-new 1972 album What’s Going On. The flow felt great and, if you like this era of music, I know you’ll enjoy this edition of Air-Conditioned.

I’ve always loved the acoustic guitar artistry of Bruce Cockburn and Jorma Kaukonen. Both have styles grounded in blues and folk, but each possess identifiable styles that have been a joy to experience for many decades.

This edition of Air-Conditioned shines some love on their music as well as John Martyn, Punch Brothers, Bonnie Raitt, Davy Graham, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, William Lee Ellis and Jorma’s old band Jefferson Airplane. It was a pleasure gathering these tracks.

I happened upon Ron Sexsmith’s latest album, The Vivian Line, about three weeks ago. I quickly learned it was produced in Nashville by my old friend, producer, multi-instrumentalist Brad Jones, which explained why it sounded so good. For those of you who don’t know Ron Sexsmith, he is a much loved singer-songwriter and novelist in Canada, winner of the 2005 Juno (Canadian Grammys) for Song Of The Year. I’ve loved his music since his 1995 self-titled album, which contained the lovely “Secret Heart.” One of the things that knocked me out about his last album, The Vivian Line, was how everything about it felt like a great lost album by The Kinks during their late Reprise Records era.

I decided to give ol’ Ron a musical group hug with several songs by The Kinks, as well as Paul McCartney’s Ram. Filling out this edition of Air-Conditioned, I snuck in some fine tracks by The Autumn Defense, Todd Rundgren, The Beatles, Van Duren, Colin Blunstone, Rufus Wainwright, and The Finn Brothers. Lovely singing and songs top to bottom. If you like any of these artists, you’re in for a treat.

I remember receiving the promo and press kit for Elvis Costello’s debut LP, My Aim Is True. It was 1977, and Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, and AC/DC were all over the airwaves. New Wave and Punk acts dominated a lot of rock press, but out of the whole batch of new faces, Elvis Costello stood out as a Renaissance guy, and over the decades, he’s produced some classic albums and written a handful of modern standards. This edition of Air-Conditioned shines some love light on a handful of tracks from his first albums. The Clash and The English Beat also receive a little extra shine, and rounding out the program, I’ve gathered up some great numbers by Joe Jackson, Nick Lowe, The Pretenders, Squeeze, The Jam, The Police, Dave Edmunds and Hoodoo Gurus. It’s a snappy little collection guaranteed to have your toes tapping.
