The nascent Freedom Fry in Myrtle Beach has upended the Upstate's long-dominant barbecue — now organized by Rep. Sheri Biggs as the Salute to Liberty dinner — as the state's must-attend GOP political event.

While the Upstate has traditionally been the hotspot for Republican candidates down the ballot, most 2026 candidates instead headed to Myrtle Beach this year to make their case to potential voters.

In 1993, developers who owned most of Sandy Island’s land proposed a bridge between the island and the mainland.

Many islanders were initially in favor of the bridge because they were under the impression that it would be available for them to use.

"If it was gonna benefit us, we were for it," explained Beulah Pyatt, a Sandy Island local. "But when we actually found out about it — they didn’t have us in the plan at all."

It was revealed that the islanders would not have as much access to the bridge as they’d been led to believe. For the people who lived there, bridge access would only be allowed for funerals or emergencies — and even then, residents would need permission to use it.
