The MEDIC Scale: Why It Exists and Why It Matters

Too many authors focus on finishing a book, not building one that works. They spend weeks, months, even years drafting something that never connects, not because they aren’t talented, but because no one gave them a real standard to measure their work against.

That’s why I created the MEDIC Scale.

It’s not a theory, it’s a tool I designed to help authors evaluate the five areas that decide whether someone keeps reading or puts the book down. It replaces vague opinions and emotional attachments with focused, honest feedback you can actually use.

What MEDIC Stands For

Every manuscript I assess is reviewed across five key traits:

Momentum — Is the story or message moving forward with purpose? Are the first 25 pages building something?
Momentum is the difference between a reader turning the page or closing the book.

Emotional Anchor — Is there something grounding your writing — a truth, a feeling, a weight that holds the reader there?
If they don’t feel it, they won’t follow it.

Distinct Voice — Does the writing sound like you — or like everyone else? Voice is how we trust a narrator.
If I can’t hear you, I can’t connect with what you’re saying.

Immediate Attention — Is the reader pulled in right away, or are you warming up for three pages?
You don’t get ten chances to hold someone’s attention. You get ten seconds.

Clear Context — Do I know who, where, what, and why without rereading?
Confusion kills connection, Clarity invites the reader to stay.

How It Works

I apply the MEDIC Scale to five parts of your book: the cover, title, subtitle, synopsis, and first 25 pages. Each section is reviewed and scored from 1 to 10, from both a professional perspective and a reader’s perspective. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s alignment. If your book is falling short, this is where you find out why.

I’m not here to flatter, I’m here to help you fix what’s broken before it gets expensive, or public.

Why It’s Necessary

Most writers don’t get real feedback until it’s too late, after they’ve paid an editor, hit publish, or released something that didn’t land. The MEDIC Scale gives you answers before all of that.

It’s assessment with direction, clear, practical, and specific.

You deserve more than “this is good.” You deserve to know why it works, or why it doesn’t, from someone who isn’t trying to sell you a dream.

Why Me

I didn’t create this because I needed something to sell, I created it because I’ve been where most authors are, unsure, stuck, and too close to the work to see what’s missing. I’ve written books that failed, I’ve written books that won. I know what it takes to get it right.

And now, I help other writers get there too.

The MEDIC Scale isn’t about judgment.
It’s about giving you a clear path forward, so your book can do what it was meant to do: connect, move, and matter.

“If your goals don’t shake you a little, they’re probably too small, and if they do scare you? Good. Go after them anyway.”

I was scared, and nervous today, as I stepped into my first smart connect on Alignable as the Group Leader. I was afraid if that I wouldn’t get enough people, that I was going to mess up, and then it happened! The slide show that I needed wasn’t on my computer, iPad, or Phone! That’s just what I needed, but the fact that I have been to so many smart connects, and knew the rules, and how to keep the energy up helped me.

I was honest to them, letting them know that I was nervous, and to bare with me through it, and guess what? Everything went well, we had a good turnout, and it helped me understand that if Brittany Sandoval didn’t think I was ready, she wouldn’t have asked me to be the group leader! I’m glad that Alignable has that support team for us, and for introducing me to other group leaders that can mentor me.

P.s. This is me while they were in the breakout rooms, and I was listening to “Higher” by Creed.

If it scares you, that’s a good thing because it means that you’re thinking bigger, and better things that will challenge you to become better.

Just because your book is a “10” to you, doesn’t mean it’s true when it comes to editors, publishers, and readers. Your “10” could be a 1, and lack every single thing that is important when writing.

In a world that praises speed over substance and quantity over quality, I chose to be the black sheep.

I chose to stand in the gap, where taking your time still matters, where quality still holds weight, and where stories deserve more than a rushed release date.

I didn’t become a manuscript assessor to critique people’s writing. I became one because I saw something missing—something that couldn’t be fixed by a checklist, a template, or a promise to “write your book in 7 days.”

I read those books, and I saw the disconnect, but what was the disconnect? The disconnect was that most rushed books are not even read at 50% of its entirety, readers aren’t slow, they know when something is just a marketing ploy, and most importantly, readers don’t like to be talked at, they like to be talked to, heard, and understood. Unfortunately, a book that is rushed, and written in 3-30 days lack most or even ALL of those elements, and marks, but once again it’s NOT because the writers didn’t have something powerful to say, but because they were pushed to publish fast instead of writing with care.

That right there, it never sat right with me, but why?

Here’s why:

✍🏽 The early stages of writing? That’s where the heart of the work lives.

✍🏽 It’s where the message is molded.

✍🏽 Where the story is stretched.

✍🏽 Where the reader is remembered.

That’s the space I hold.

Because I refuse to:

❌chase trends

❌ Rush a meaningful manuscript

❌ Accept what society has normalized, just so everyone can call themselves an “author”

Here’s why I stand on this hill, and this belief:

🥱 Not every writer is an author

🥱 Just because you wrote a bestseller doesn’t make you an expert

🥱 90% of rushed books miss the mark that they were trying for 😮.

I help writers slow down and build something that actually lasts.

✉️ If you’re in the beginning stages of your manuscript and wondering if it’s strong enough to connect—let’s talk, not about rushing it, but about getting it right. Drop a comment, send a message, or just let me know where you are in the process. I’m here for the ones who care about writing it well.

I’m not everybody else, so don’t come to me saying “Well they said this…”

“They” probably told you to write your book in 7 days.
“They” probably said just get it done and worry about the rest later.
“They” are focused on speed, surface-level wins, and sales funnels.

But let me tell you something—those books? They’re built for marketing, not meaning.

I help YOU STRENGTHEN your manuscript to reach your readers and create real impact. That takes time, effort, and patience, you can’t rush transformation, and you definitely can’t fake connection.

I help you see the things that AI can’t do, I do what a thrown-together “authority book” built in 3–30 days CAN’T.

I do the heavy lifting in the beginning so YOU don’t have to backtrack later.

Because I do what others WON’T— My focus isn’t book rankings, It’s not a paycheck, It’s not a vanity metric.

My main objective is helping YOU write something that actually matters.

What’s the point of writing a book if no one makes it past page 25?

That’s the hard truth I had to learn- and now, it’s what I help other writers avoid. As The Manuscript Medic, my job isn’t to flatter you, it’s to tell you the truth about your manuscript and help you fix it, before you waste time or money on editing, formatting, or pitching. Most readers decide whether they’ll stick with your story within the first 25 pages, if those pages don’t hit with clarity, conflict, and character, then the rest of your manuscript doesn’t stand a chance.

Whether you’re an aspiring or seasoned author, you need honest, educated feedback that looks beyond grammar and gets into what makes your story work.

Your manuscript deserves more than hype, it deserves precision.

Let’s be real—most people think a strong manuscript is about clean grammar, fancy sentence structure, or having the perfect plot twist, but that’s not what makes a reader stay, that’s not what makes someone sit with your words and think, “This is what I’ve been feeling, but didn’t know how to say.”

A strong manuscript doesn’t perform—it connects, and connection doesn’t come from perfection, it comes from truth.

Whether you’re writing nonfiction or fiction, the reader needs to feel something early, they need to know they’re not alone. That starts with showing up in your writing with intention, not just information, you can’t just tell a story—you have to mean it, the emotions have to be lived in, the message has to be carried by someone who’s wrestled with it. The reader doesn’t need you to impress them—they need you to meet them.

So when you sit down to write or revise, don’t just focus on sounding polished. Focus on being honest. Focus on saying something that matters. That’s how you create pages with power. That’s how your story makes it from the page to someone’s heart.

P.s. got a manuscript that needs reviewing, DM me “Review” to get started today.

“Best seller” & “NYT bestseller” doesn’t mean it’s good, just means that the marketing is impeccable. Ranks don’t matter when the manuscript fails to deliver a meaningful message.
