Thomas L. “Tommy” Stepp, a major figure in South Carolina public broadcasting and higher education, has died. Details to follow soon on his obit.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Tommy worked as a photographer, film editor, television producer, executive producer and network executive. At South Carolina ETV, he served as deputy manager and later as senior vice president. His production work included the distinguished series of literary interviews jointly produced by SCETV and the University of South Carolina.

He later became a senior administrator at the University of South Carolina, serving as Secretary of the Board of Trustees, University Secretary and Treasurer. After his retirement, he continued to be identified as Secretary Emeritus of the Board.

USC’s Board of Visitors scholarship was named in his honor, recognizing students for creativity, civic involvement, academic achievement and financial need.

Tommy’s long service connected two institutions central to the intellectual and cultural life of South Carolina—SCETV and the University of South Carolina. His former colleagues remember a gifted broadcaster, administrator and public servant whose influence extended across generations.

He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the chapter of The University of South Carolina. South Carolina ETV

Sad news for our SCETV family. We received word a few minutes ago that Tom Stepp passed away suddenly today from a heart attack at his mountain home.
