Summer Competitive League Update – Week 2

Two weeks down and six weeks to go!

Congratulations to our Week 2 top scorers:
🥇 Dodie – 120
🥈 Micki – 95
🥉 Patricia – 60

These players put together some impressive hands and earned valuable points in a very competitive night of play.

Current Standings After Week 2 Top 3 Scorers:

One of the things I love most about league play is watching players grow more confident each week. We’re seeing faster Charlestons, stronger defensive play, and more strategic decision-making at every table.

Remember, we’re only a quarter of the way through the season. A big night, a self-pick, or a few well-timed Mahjongs can change the leaderboard quickly!

Thank you to everyone participating and helping make our first Summer Competitive League such a success. We can’t wait to see what Week 3 brings.

NMJL Best Practice: Follow the Order!

One of the easiest ways to improve your table etiquette and avoid costly mistakes is to follow the proper procedure when calling a discarded tile.

The Correct Sequence:
1️⃣ Call the discarded tile.
2️⃣ Place the discarded tile on the top shelf of your rack first.
3️⃣ Bring up the matching tiles from your hand.
4️⃣ Expose the complete set.

While the NMJL rulebook doesn’t specifically say, “Place the discarded tile on the rack first,” this is a widely accepted NMJL best practice taught by instructors and used in tournament play.

Why is it important?

✔️ Prevents confusion about which tile was called
✔️ Keeps exposures clear and organized
✔️ Avoids accidentally revealing information about your hand
✔️ Helps prevent exposure errors that could lead to a dead hand
✔️ Builds good habits for competitive and tournament play

Remember: The tile comes up first. The matching tiles come up second.

Week 1 of Competitive League Play is officially in the books, and what a fun night it was!

From learning the flow of tournament-style play to getting comfortable with scoring, our players jumped right in and embraced the challenge. Some tables finished three games, others finished four, but every table was filled with strategy, laughter, learning, and a little friendly competition.

One of the best parts of the evening was watching everyone grow more confident with each hand. Competitive play moves a little faster, but that confidence and speed will continue to come as the weeks go on.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped create such a welcoming and supportive environment. We are already looking forward to Week 2 and seeing how the leaderboard changes!
