A brave father in Eastpointe, Michigan, Ray Lucas, risked his life to save his twin 18-month-old daughters from a house fire. On July 17, Lucas and his girlfriend, Shi’Ann Brown, returned from a trip to the store to find their home engulfed in flames. Their twins, Malaysia and Milan, were trapped inside, while Lucas’s mother, who had been watching the girls, panicked outside.
“I was speechless. Action took over me. I ran into the house to get my babies,” Lucas told CNN. The fire had spread across three floors, including the basement where the twins were in their crib. Navigating through thick smoke and flames, Lucas reached the basement, found his daughters, and held them close to protect them as he carried them out. Both girls were quiet, likely in shock, but responsive.
After handing the twins to his mother, Lucas realized his niece was still trapped on the second floor. Seeing her through a second-story window, he instructed her to jump, catching her safely.
Lucas suffered second- and third-degree burns on his arms, face, ears, and neck, and was temporarily blind for three days due to smoke exposure. His daughters also sustained serious burns and were treated in the Children’s Hospital of Michigan ICU. Despite the physical and mental pain, Lucas said he is relieved that his daughters and niece survived.
This heroic act highlights the courage and selflessness of a parent willing to risk everything for their children.
