I am so GRATEFUL that Grace’s maternal instincts kicked in STRONG immediately. Every Dam’s instincts don’t activate the way they should. There’s several reasons a dam may not be exhibiting good maternal instincts. A few are: INEXPERIENCE (first timers may not know exactly what to do and need your guidance), STRESS (chaotic or unsafe environment may distract), HEALTH ISSUES (postpartum or exhaustion), WEAK BONDING (lack of early contact with the pups after birth may affect instincts), and GENETICS (some just generally lack maternal instincts especially if they were poorly socialized as a pup themselves). Of course you should step in immediately if you notice a dam not playing her role but you really shouldn’t have to. For the first 3 weeks your main concern should be the Dam and ensuring her health and happiness so that she can do her job and care for her pups on her own.
